Time to switch allegiances? Maybe penya and the HEW HATERS have a point?

Okay, so with Auburn not playing this weekend, I decided to watch some other CFB games, more than usual for me. Among those, I watched a good bit of the GaTech-Miami game. Miami plays in the ACC and probably is a little overrated, but is a good team. Miami is better than multiple teams that have beaten us. Tech is a decent team, but no great shakes and almost certainly not as talented as Miami. The Tech OL was of particular interest to me. Their RT is a RS senior from the 2020 recruiting class. Their center is a senior from their 2021 class. Their LG is a former walkon from their 2021 class. The LT is a 4th year transfer from Kanas and the RG is a 3rd year transfer from MTSU.

Why does this matter? Well, that GaTech OL doesn't look like a bunch of world beaters from a talent perspective. It may not be a ragtag group of misfits, but it's at best a bunch of guys who were marginal SEC type talents coming out of HS. It doesn't look any more talented than our OL and not too much more experienced, yet I saw from it something I have not seen from our OL. Basically, all season, when our O is in a passing down, we cannot protect the passer. I mean we can't protect him at all, not even when the D just gives a plain old 4-man rush. And I'm not talking elite defense. We can't protect the passer vs Vandy or Cal. Never mind when the opponent blitzes. However, GaTech was able to protect the passer on such downs. Again, Miami may be overrated, but their D is better than Vandy or Cal and probably a couple of other opponents we have faced. Yes, Tech runs a different kind of O. They ran the ball a lot vs Miami, but when they got in passing downs like 3rd and 8, they still were able to protect the passer and complete key passes first downs in critical situations. We consistently have failed in this.

In fact, it seems like very team out there, even pretty bad ones, is better at this than we are. I'm not trying to give the QB a free pass here. QB is a huge part of our offensive problems. I'm not even necessarily criticizing the OL coach. There are a lot of moving parts on offense. I'm just saying that there is no excuse - neither QB nor OL experience/talent, although both of those matter - to excuse what we've seen on our offense. I'm starting to think my dad is right when he says Hugh "needs to get somebody to take care of his sh*t for him on offense." We have somebody with the title of offensive coordinator, but I don't think our offense is being run properly if at all. I suspect Freeze either needs to do like Steve Spurrier used to and actually *be* his own OC, and by that I mean go to all meetings, formulate the gameplan, give input on all the position groups, call all the plays, etc., or he needs to get somebody else to do that and get out of it. In short, what we have right now probably falls into the category of half-assed. If teams like GaTech can scheme around their talent deficiencies and compete with or beat teams that are more talented, then we should be able to do that, at least a couple of times and especially against opponents who ar not even as talented. Instead, we have consistently failed on offense. I'm not saying we should give up on Freeze, but he needs to get it together. There is no excuse for this, even with the mess he inherited.

tl;dr - @penya87 and @FIG-JAM and the HEW HATERS have a point.

Why is nobody talking about Tahaad ??

I've watched multiple national / regional preseason shows and not one person has mentioned Pettiford as a reason for AU potential success this year. Seems strange to me that a top 30 recruit, McDonald's / Jordan / Pangos All American, electricity factory like Tahaad isn't factoring into the prognostication.

Maybe it's because pundits see Denver, Miles, and Pegues and just assume that there won't be minutes for him...but IMO you can't keep this kid off the floor.

Maybe it's just me but it seems like the world is collectively sleeping on young Haad ..and I kinda love it.

Pretty Good Article on What Trump Plans to do Immediately.

It has the usual media jabs at Trump and tells a few silly lies here and there but if you beyond the media BS its a pretty good list of what he can go after quickly.

FOOTBALL Hugh Freeze quick notes (UL-Monroe week)

We are set to speak with Hugh Freeze as the Tigers prepare to host UL-Monroe this Saturday in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Follow along and refresh for all updates.

*** Good open week. Now it's time to get back and try to improve. Try to get a win in Jordan-Hare. Our kids continue to practice hard. Really proud of them sticking to it in what has been a disappointing year. The good ones, they fight. I've really been pleased for the most part with the people in this building.

*** Mentions UL-Monroe is an improved team. Outstanding running back. Play extremely hard. Played against them when the coaching staff was at UAB.

*** Home crowd continues to be really supportive even in tough times.

*** Veteran's Day today and Auburn's military appreciation day is this week.

*** On response in locker room following Vandy game: "A lot of hurt."

*** First time Hugh has been through a season like this where it seems everything that can go wrong has.

*** On QB situation: "Payton's played solid. He wasn't able to practice last week due to the shoulder injury. We will see how he feels this week and see what the other guys do taking the reps." Mentions you have to start to look at the big picture.

*** Any more reps for Walker? "Second open week, we got the 3s a lot more reps. They had a little scrimmage to close out the week. Guys that don't typically get reps."

*** Other spots that have caught his eye? "Pretty settled at most spots and we don't have any other DBs to try right now. I thought Jarquez needed a break." Really tried to get Jeremiah Wright and Too Tall some rest as well.

*** Importance of the next 3 weeks on building momentum: "It's vital that we compete and that's the goal." Mentions recruiting is vital as well to close out the 2025 class.

*** On offensive play-calling and how it works: "It's a combination. Obviously the game plan is done in a room with all of us. It's usually a mixture."

*** Says they might be asking a bit too much from the young wide receivers.

*** On not taking UL-Monroe lightly: "Well, we don't take anyone lightly from a staff's perspective." Mentions they can't take anyone lightly.

*** On McPherson: "I haven't gotten the report on him today. We let them off Saturday and Sunday. It was still a struggle as of Friday where he couldn't practice."

*** On how McPherson being out affects play-calling: "It has to." Mentions the momentum killers from the missed kicks have hurt.

*** Evaluating big picture at other positions? "I think we already playing them all. All the young kids that haven't redshirt are playing in some fashion."

*** "It's already started. You're already actively trying to recruit your own roster." - on personnel

That's it for Hugh. Have a great Monday.

MODS, “insiders”, AU FB 🏈 …. Anyone think Durkin gets hired away?

His group has shown steady improvement in all areas. Has kept us in position to win 5 of our 6 losses and is somehow able to use true freshmen increasingly as the season progresses.

Ole 73 thinking he’d be a top target this off season for programs performing much better than our Tigers. Regardless of the Maryland issues.

Does Freeze appreciate and value Durkin? Will AU reward him financially to keep him?

We definitely need some stability in at least one area. ST suck. Offense continues to flail

2025 defense could be elite if we can keep the staff and players around

Should we stop discussing the on their field the product of a near dead program?
Should we limit the football conversations to off the field accomplishments?

I'm kind of sick of reading about us sucking and denial is usually the best strategy.
