HOOPS PORTAL UPDATE: Middlebrooks is here (4-16-23)

Clemson center Ben Middlebrooks, who stands 6-foot-10, has arrived on campus for a visit.

He was at NC State on Friday and Saturday. He left without committing, which is newsy considering how this portal period has unfolded.

He looks like an ideal candidate for the "backup big" on Auburn's portal wishlist.

Middlebrooks shot 52% from 2, 77% at the line. Outstanding offensive rebounder. Solid defensive rebounder and shot blocker. Takes risks on the defensive end, which yields a lot of fouls and steals.

Synergy Sports lists him as a "good" offensive player, a "below average" defender.

The Inflation Reduction Act is becoming the Inflation Perpetuation Act.

Remember Stumpy crowing about how inflation dropped the month the act was passed and crediting it to the passage of the act? I pointed out then how the act had zero to do with inflation dropping and the soaring gov't spending would cause more inflation....

Well damn.... Give stumpy a hand, he's consistent.

RECRUITING Just spoke with SEVERAL recruits...

Here are some quick-hitters on each. I'll have stories on each rolling out over the next day or so, as well.
  • Anthony Rogers, 2025 RB
    • Auburn getting somewhat of a fresh start with him, now that Derrick Nix is here. Possibly could set up an OV to Auburn, still locked in with Alabama.
    • Alabama retaining RB coach Robert Gillespie was big in staying on board.
    • Now that he's at Carver Montgomery, he's right down the road. Definitely a possibility to see him again.
  • Mal Waldrep, 2025 OL
    • Relationship with Jake Thornton has really grown. They don't just talk recruiting, they're starting to look more in-depth at Auburn's schemes and things of that nature.
    • Got to sit through a meeting, first time he's been able to do that.
    • Good for him to see some former teammates (Cam Coleman, Dylan Gentry) out on the practice field.
    • Auburn, Alabama and Clemson appear to be the big schools for him, with Florida and Tennessee also working their way into the picture.
    • Likely fits into Auburn as an interior guy as both a guard and a center, but mostly center.
    • Auburn OV trending toward the first weekend of June, one week after his Clemson OV
  • Daune Morris, 2025 RB
    • First visit to Auburn and it was a really good one, met with Derrick Nix and Hugh Freeze.
    • Has a background with Charles Kelly, knew him when Kelly was at Colorado and never lost contact.
    • Nix is the primary recruiter and AU likes him at RB, but also slot receiver.
    • Auburn making it known he's a priority, will set up an official visit.
    • USC, Colorado, Tennessee, Kentucky and Louisville are some other programs in the mix.
  • TK Norman, 2025 WR
    • Picked up the Auburn offer recently, something he was looking forward to for a while.
    • Really took a step forward with Marcus Davis and their relationship.
    • Loves that he knows some people on the team, and that if he were to go to AU, he'd have some people looking after him.
    • Will be back later this month.
  • Aaron Gregory, 2026 WR
    • First time back in Auburn since last fall.
    • One-on-one time with Marcus Davis and he loves the energy that Davis brings. Big fan of his teaching style, as well.
    • Also got one-on-one time with Freeze.
    • Caleb Burton stood out to him while watching practice.
    • Auburn's team bond is something that stood out to him.
    • Tennessee and Colorado next week
    • Expect Auburn to be a factor in his recruitment down the stretch, especially after today.
