LAMP: I went to the Vandy game

I broke bread with some Vandy fans after the game. Told them the AUBURN faithful saw this L coming a mile away with the Diego/Kill/Hugh trifecta. They complimented our defense and our precious DURKIN saying how we did a good job bottling Pavia up.

One of the Vandy bros lamented that they should be 8-1/7-2 mentioning games they gave away to Mizzou/Dell/Texas. Idk wasn't really listening to his argument but it made me laugh that we live in a world where Vanderbilt football is bitching about how they should be 8-1 and here we sit 3-6 praying for 4 wins

i agree with BMatt from the Brain Drain

the Auburn offense fails in critical moments because it isn’t physically and mentally tough. The physically tough part is a worry because you have programs for that.

@Jay G. Tate ’s comment on the Drain that Hugh gives the team a lot of grace could be something to do with the mentally tough part.

Another thing that stands out to me is the timing of the offense. There is no rhythm and crispness to what they are doing which kind of is an indictment on how we practice.

In closing, we fuct fam.

Auburn's Offense inside the opponents 40yd line

One of our biggest weaknesses this year is something called "POINTS PER OPPORTUNITY"

this means "getting points when you cross the opponents 40 yard line"

so far this year- auburns had a total of 40 scoring opportunities. now that might not seem like much but its actually inline with most of the SEC only slightly lagging

(alabama-43, arkansas-47, georgia-44, lsu-49, mizzou-50, texas-51, ole miss-54)

the good news is that kentucky is the lowest by a good margin at 33 opportunities on the year. they are slightly more efficient with their chances though. the only other team less than 40 is miss st with 37

a big chunk is coming from aamu and new mexico game tho (15 of them from those 2 games)

we are extremely bad at converting them into points

even worse if you take out the aamu game

tldr: we are really good at shooting ourselves in the foot

heres the breakdown of each opportunity in individual games this year. on eachof these opportunities we should at least be getting 3 points to be "SEC AVERAGE"
VS AAMU

benchmarks to look for---- passing yards per attempt >7yards rushing yards per attempt >3 should be >3 points per opportunity to be average, >4 to be "good"

This article outlines when we’ll get results in each state. Hopefully this clears things up so that some on here don’t believe whatever they see on Truth Social…

A timeline of Gus Malzahn CEO and Gus Malzahn play-caller

2013-2015 Gus the play-caller

2016, seat starts to warm early in season. Announces Lashlee will call plays before LSU.

Sept. 27, 2016: “In this day and time in this league, to be the head coach and call an offense is not realistic, at least for me,” he said. “It hit me after that first game. What’s best for our team, 100 percent is what’s best. We’ve got very good offensive coaches that will definitely do a great job with that, I believe. I think we’ll get nothing but better.”

Late season, Kerryon Johnson gets hurt. Gus resumes play-calling for remainder of season, which ends down 21 and calling a timeout late in the game to run a trick play on the final snap vs Oklahoma...

Seat is getting awfully hot....

Jan. 21, 2017, on the hiring of Chip Lindsey: “Chip is the quarterback coach and the offensive coordinator. I think I told him — my old offensive clipboard, I’m retiring it. That’s probably the best way to answer that.”

There is a clear struggle of who controls the offense. As mentioned in an August 2017 Rundown, Chip is told he can call plays, but Gus gets to decide what all is allowed on the play sheet.

Auburn blows 20 point lead at LSU. Malzahn is informed by the PTB that Chip Lindsey will call plays.

With Lindsey at the helm, Auburn comes within a Kerry Johnson injury of making the playoffs, losing in the SEC Championship Game to UGA.

With some leverage via Arkansas offer and some Jimmy Sexton work, Gus Malzahn signs a 7-year $49M contract. He tells the PTB to shove it, it's his offense.

2018 is a struggle for the offense. Chip Lindsey leaves for the Kansas Offensive Coordinator job (which doesn't last long as he eventually gets the Troy HC job).

July 18, 2019, after Lindsey’s departure: “Through the years, you get advice and all of that. And, of course, I made a mistake…. When I decided to go back and call plays, that’s really who I am. I’m an offensive guy. That’s what got me where I’m at…. When (Lindsey) left, just the reality is what it is now. Just decided to getting back to being me and call plays. It’s been a very refreshing thing.”

2019- Auburn hires Memphis QB coach Kenny Dillingham to serve as Gus' eyes in the sky while Gus calls plays.

Following 2019 season, Auburn hires former Clemson OC and Arky HC Chad Morris as HC.

1/21/20 “Chad Morris, in my opinion, is one of the best offensive minds in all of college football,” Malzahn said. “We’re going to turn him loose, and I’m very excited that he’s a part. I trust him 110 percent. He’s going to take our offense, and he’s going to run with it.”

I tried to not let it ruin my weekend

But I've just got to vent about Hugh's comment about Jarquez Hunter. WTF are you saving him for Hugh? We don't play an SEC team for 3 weeks, a bye, ULM and then A&M. Like WTF is this "gassed" bullshit excuse he came up with. I DGAS that they were loading the box, do exactly what you did against Kentucky....use Hunter in the passing game, match him up against a LB in space on short quick throws. Hell Will Friend was able to scheme shit up better against ALABAMA, with a worse OL against a better defense...like WTF kind of bullshit is that. I stuck with Hugh for almost 2 years but shit like that makes me question if he even has what it takes to be an SEC HC, much less a playcaller. Yes Thorne isn't great and is a big part of the offensive operations failure this year and we've discussed numerous times, but at least pretend like you want to win a fuggin football game and give you best player touches against VANDERBILT. Sorry for the rant, I try not to let it ruin my weekend. I've learned there are so many more important things in life than the outcome of a football game. But this is not the Auburn I know anymore, it's unrecognizable, and Hugh's ass better fix it in the offseason. Zero excuses for an offense to score SEVEN points vs Vanderbilt AT HOME.. Ok I feel better now...maybe. Thoughts? Do ya'll just all hate me now because I finally had a glimmer of hope against beating UK and went "old Rice"?

I am now in the camp

that “Riley Leonard” was a miss

the story is apparently hugh wanted him but “didnt want to pay the money he was asking for”

we’d be a 6win maybe 7win team if riley was the starting qb

two offseason narratives that turned out to be lies:

#1.) more talent around thorne would get him to “michigan st performance levels”

#2.) portal qbs need spring practice

gonna need to factor these into my “portal evaluations” in upcoming months
