My early pick of a defensive newcomer who will turn heads - Kaleb Harris

Got to talk to his coach, Mark Freeman, a while back. Glowing praise about what a ferocious headhunter Kaleb Harris is.

Tater Head had effed up what should have been an easy get, as Harris grew up loving AU. But Hugh talked to Freeman and got back on the kid. 3-star my a$$.

MF made a point that Harris’s natural position is not Safety, but Nickel / Star. He’s slightly lacking the elite speed at S, but can be super elite at Nickel.

"He might be the most impactful football player we’ve ever had," Freeman said. "He’s physical, he’s strong, his instincts are tremendous. He’s our leader, he’s our dog. He’s a good football player."

"He is a heck of a star/nickel/money type player," Freeman said. "He loves the line of scrimmage, he loves tackling people, but he can cover so he’s a really good football player."

Hoping Harris’s great experience at Auburn opens a pipeline or at least “fair play” for AU recruiting Thompson.

Fellaz, we pozzzibly have a NEW James Bond

Lotz of CHATTER the laztr coupla yeeerz about a NEW JAMES BOND.
All signs point to this dude. Kinda interezzzting guy. Iz dating or married to a woman that's 22 yeeeerz older than he iz.

If conference tournaments don’t matter…

… then let’s stop having them. And that would be fine. The automatic bids for all the conferences that get them for their tournament winners can just go to their regular season champions. No more teams with losing records knocking more deserving mid majors out of it. No more situations like what happened to Florida, losing a key starter in a meaningless game. Just end the regular season and start the NCAA tournament a weekend earlier. It would also save the fans some money. Instead of wasting time and travel expenses on glorified exhibition games, they can use those resources toward flying across the country for the first round of March Madness.

Seems like a win-win all the way around. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

🏀 A little play breakdown from Sunday. KD haters - ignore.

Ever since the bracket came out, I've been jacked up like a spider monkey mainlining methamphetamine, pouring over highlights and game replays, trying to pick out some of the little things that make me love this team so much. This is one of my favorite plays from the secT final, and an example of what KD brings to this team every game, even if his shots aren't falling.

With 23 secs left on the shot clock the gators center, axel condom, sets a screen on KD at the top of the key. If you recall, this bloke is the giant former rugby player from Oceania. tv announcers tend to mention this a lot, as if it's indicative of toughness, I guess. Anyway, he's got nearly a foot of height and 40-50 lbs on KD, but we'll soon see that the "No Fear" shirt you remember from middle school was actually correct. It aint the size of the dog in the fight...yadda yadda yadda.

Condom rolls to the low block after the pick. KD briefly switches to samuel, then directs Johni to take him, and picks up condom. As KD starts to body condom, Samuel gets the ball just inside the 3 pt line. JB is 4-5 feet away with his hands down, and condom is about 8 feet away, with position on KD. Samuel looks at making the entry pass but quickly thinks better of it. Little did he know, but KD was listening to Juvenile during pre-game, and he proceeds to back dat azzz up and drive condom completely out of the lane.

Condom regroups and tosses KD aside using both hands, but KD recovers in less than a second and is immediately back in front, preventing another entry pass to take advantage of this perceived "mismatch." Condom realizes he's the one who's overmatched, and rotates back to the top of the key.

Chad offers to switch and pick up condom, but KD says, "NO! This clown's no threat without an oblong ball," and waves him off. KD moves to double the driver as JB cuts him off. Once the driver picks up his dribble, KD immediately rotates back to condom, getting a body on him and preparing to drive him out of offensive rebounding position.

This subtle move allows Chad a split-second head start to move into the passing lane for the steal and run-out.

KD is fist-pumping and turning to talk shit before CBM even crosses mid-court, letting condom know just how useless he is, and telling him he's better off playing soccer than rugby or whatever it is they do in that penile colony.

Of course this is just a single play, but I was impressed watching KD assert his dominance over a big man for the majority of a possession. KD was a starter when we played yale in Auburn Arena in late 2021. Yes, he can be maddening at times, but you have to respect his willingness to embrace coming off the bench, and how he relishes the opportunity to take advantage of fresh legs and put pressure on the opposing defense.

One of the reasons this team is so dangerous is its depth, and the variety of role players. In order to make a run, we will need good performances from KD, CJ, C-Mo and Tre at different times. Few teams have 8-10 guys that can go get 10-15 on a given night. We are as deep and versatile as any team in the country, and we are primed for a run. ZFG about uconn and the seeding. We can beat anyone.

tl;dr: We back down from no one, and KD exemplifies that.

Auburn has an SEC Title in 4 of the last 7 seasons

and easily could have 5 in the last 7 as our 2020 squad finished second in the regular season and had their best performance of the season in the regular season finale by blowing out Tennessee in Knoxville (Highlights below). Had huge momentum going into the SEC Tourney before COVID ended that. Throw a Final Four in there as well in that time.

That's a level of success I didn't see for Auburn basketball in even my wildest dreams.

HOOPS Bruce Pearl quick notes (3/19)...

Bruce Pearl is speaking to us Tuesday morning before practice and before leaving for Spokane and the first round matchup against Yale in the NCAA Tournament. Here's a summary...

** Pearl says the Ivy League has had a really good record in NCAAT in last eight years. They've won three games. Yale beat Baylor in 2016 and Princeton beat Arizona last year. They've also had several near misses.

** Yale is a good team and good program and a history of first-round upsets. They play hard and physical and smart. Will run great stuff and have good 3-point shooters.

** Pearl said they've primarily prepared for Yale so far. Also scouting UAB and SDSU.

** Pearl said he's fine with the seed but it could be better.

** Spokane is a beautiful city. Excited to see Gonzaga and their campus, but I'd rather go there fishing. Feel for families and fans trying to get out there. The pod system was created so this wouldn't happen. We have to leave Tuesday to play Friday in a different time zone.

** If we're lucky enough to win, we won't leave until Monday.

** Pearl said they should study where most teams are coming from in the Tournament and put more pods in those regions.

** Pearl said he's not going to talk about winning SEC Championship much now. Tennessee is 0-2 since winning the regular season championship. Can't celebrate for long. Our guys will be excited about playing in this tournament and we'll get them ready.

** Pearl said he thought this was a good team that could be very good. We became a better defensive team and became physical enough to compete. We've done a great job of being unselfish and accepting less individually so we could achieve more as a team.

** Pearl said August Mahoney may be best 3-pointer shooter in country. Their 7-footer is very versatile and can do a lot. Point guard is very good too. The key is to defend without fouling.

** Think it's important that so many players have been here at Auburn for 4 or 5 years like Jaylin, Dylan and Chris Moore. Moore is a great leader and loves Auburn. He didn't want to let his teammates and coaches down early in the year and lost confidence in himself. He lost spot to Lior Berman. Pearl talked to him about staying ready and learn from what happened. He did. He didn't put too much pressure on himself and is enjoying the game.

*****THAT'S ALL*****

🏀Portal Watch: Centers 🏀

ok so something ive been looking at are viable centers in midmajors we could look at to replace broome in the case he goes pro (seems pretty likely)

here are most recent major targets pearl has gone after in the portal

Walker Kessler:

0XSjEfj.png

not shown: midrange 2pt% at UNC = 44% (about 60-75th percentile)

Johni Broome:

znLiL0L.png

midrange 2pt% = 40% (50th percentile)

Micah Handlogten:

zXAd0Cs.png

midrange 2pt% = 43.8%

also someone who visited campus last portal season =

Ben Middlebrooks

irgh951.png

midrange 2pt% = 10.0%

believe he was more of a roleplayer/coming off the bench but still similar profile with lower upside

so looking at this id say we'd need someone

1.) underclassman (fr/so)

2.) with at least 12% orb/20% drb (ideally 40% combined which is tough to find)

3.) blk% > 4% but ideally 7+. bruce likes centers with clean blocks

4.) decent midrange + 60%+ 2pt overall

5.) at least 6'9 ideally 6'10 and up

i think high free throw rate would be nice too + at least 20% minutes played (looking for underclassman with high upside basically

things that dont matter as much = 3pt shooting + ft shooting (but would be nice)

here's potential midmajor guys

E1DkHD6.png

if any of these top5 hit the portal, theyre gonna get a lot of teams in contact in a hurry....

list is very limited so anyone looking for a center will jump on them

saw the arky st guy last night vs app st. hes really good and would love him. High Point guy is also interesting. high point was one of the best midmajor teams to improve from week1 to tournament weekend in kenpom rankings/adjusted margin. the other 3 guys are a little smaler and dont really pose perimeter threat besides toppin

some juniors in midmajors:

zoUvIei.png

a lot of these dudes are really good. dont think we've gone after uperclassman centers. if the pool is limited, might have to go this route for a 1yr stopgap. playing time would be a main issue (say if cardwell returns) and a really really tough sell.

heres some of the top high major guys who fit the profile

9wvOEMa.png

udeh is also a guy we talked to last portal window. any of these guys hitting the portal would be surprising tbh. maybe if stackhouse gets fired watch for lang, he was a highly rated recruit

anyways watch for any of these names if they hit the portal over the next week or so cause its closing in on portal time

RECRUITING Four-star OL talks Auburn visit...

Micah DeBose visited Auburn Saturday, as the four-star OL made his first trip in several months.

Note: I believe some other offensive linemen are moving up on Auburn's board. I don't believe Auburn's pursuit of DeBose to be as hot as it was months ago.
