FOOTBALL Hugh Freeze quick notes (pre-Texas A&M)

We are set to speak with Hugh Freeze as Auburn prepares to host Texas A&M in the Tigers' last game in Jordan-Hare Stadium this season.

Follow along and refresh for all updates.

*** Thanks us for working with him on the time today. Had a few things to do this morning.

*** Thought we played well. Offense and defense won third down. Didn't get any takeaways so that was disappointing. Six drives were 3-and-out. Both offense and defense started third quarter lackadaisical. The good thing is that they recognized it and owned it and bounced back. Can't do that in the future.

*** Ian Vachon did a really good job along with protection, snapper and holder.

*** Thought it was a solid day for sure against a team that was playing solid football. Hopefully it gives us confidence going into these last two SEC games. A&M is loaded with NFL talent on defense and really a problem for you.

*** Congrats to Payton Thorne on the Davey O'Brien Foundation nominee for Player of the Week.

*** Says he hasn't watched A&M's offense yet.

*** On what he can take from Saturday? "Need to get our playmakers involved early and need to win first down."

*** Temptation when playing a good defense like A&M is to keep them guessing and all of a sudden you aren't playing with great confidence with what you are doing.

*** On Ian Vachon and him being the guy ahead: "It's be hard to take it from him at this point. I think Towns is going to be outstanding, he's just a young freshman. All of our young freshmen are making mistakes."

*** On getting the ball to Cam Coleman: "I would love to absolutely answer that and say we are throwing it to him 8 times, but I don't get to disguise the coverage. It's hard to design a play where he will definitely get the ball."

*** Last home game of the season and a big senior class: "I've said it before our crowd has been incredible all year long and can't thank them enough for the support. I know they will be there loud on Saturday night."

*** On facing A&M QB, another versatile QB: "Yeah, it was something we were awful at at the beginning of the year. We have gotten better at contain."

*** On Demarcus Riddick and what he brings: "You just answered it for me. We changed when we started playing him. It's not that others were playing well in spots but someone that has the ability that can run and can tackle those dual-threat QBs has made a difference."

*** On gapping a lot: "You're always going to lean on zone schemes. They are going to fare better than the gap schemes. They can be feast or famine. There's only so many things a defense can do."

*** A question that was asked last week about re-recruiting your roster is asked by someone who wasn't here.

*** Mentions Jake Thorne (OL coach) wants the ball to come out quick against A&M

*** On continuing momentum and carryover: "Our kids have kept fighting. They have kept coming and working with our staff. I think you saw our young receivers play with a little more confidence on Saturday. Hopefully that success will breed over into great practices."

*** On Mike Elko hire and what he has accomplished at A&M and what is different about them then in the past: "I think the rosters are very similar from last year to this year. Offensively they are more multiple and do a few more things because of their dual-threat QB."

That's it for Hugh! Have a great Monday.

Abolishing the department of education.

“Abolishing the agency would be a tough order, however. It would require 60 senators' approval. According to reports, a reconciliation bill defunding bureaucratic positions and education programs is a more likely alternative”

Why on earth would republicans not get 60 votes for this? Seems to me the Amercan people sent a very clear message that this is what they want. Am I wrong to think they should be able to get to 60?

Man o man ...

I am struggling mightily to temper my expectations for this team. Gotta get better. Gotta tighten up these rotations.

I honest to goodness don't know how you defend us.

We will have a game where nothing falls at some point, but you're not stopping us unless we stop ourselves.

Defensively this bunch is a step above the last several years' squads. We're not having to take so many chances, defending without fouling. Bigs can stay home to collect boards and don't have to offer as much weakside defense bc the perimeter defenders for the most part are doing their jobs. Quick hands everywhere. UNA has a quick team and they were able to consistently get into the paint and score on floaters and fades, so we'll need to work on staying on our feet and forcing the outlet pass in those situations.

There are at least 4-5 players on this team that can explode for us on any given night, and I can't wait to see us run this gauntlet.

We played sloppy tonight in transition and that was really the only thing that bothered me at all. I hope that JPP can find his role. With Kelly being able to trigger us in transition like he showed tonight I think JPP's minutes are going to wane. Had hoped BP would get the two flight club members on the court today bc I don't want him to have the temptation to **** with rotations of new players in Maui, since that's BP's favorite.thing.ever. But it is what it is. Noticed that JH wasn't dressed and didn't warm up, though Turtle did.

We have more gears. I can't wait to see them.

Patterson is BOOGER from Revenge of the Nerds for those of you old enough to remember. I know the students today don't know but dude has the dirty sanchez going.

HOOPS Post game quick notes

I'm consolidating the players and Bruce into the same thread because that makes sense to me.

Bruce is going first:

  • He thinks Auburn respected its opponent
  • Auburn had a size advantage - it took them a bit to use it, but Johni Broome proved why he's an All-American.
  • Auburn's next four opponents are "Elite 8" caliber teams
  • Pearl on the scoring tonight: "It was a great balance of inside-out... thought we could've done a better job in the fast break"
  • Pearl said that he didn't like how the starting lineup started but liked how they came out in the second half. Also mentioned that guys such as Chaney Johnson and Tahaad Pettiford could find their way into the lineup eventually
  • Pearl is asked about Auburn forcing each team it has faced to a negative ast/to ratio: "You can do that sometimes when you have good one-on-one defenders."
  • Pearl mentioned that they forced North Alabama, who plays a similar style to Auburn, to make one-on-one plays
  • Pearl asked about taking opponents seriously: "We haven't had much adversity. I try to give my guys adversity by coaching them hard... I have very high expectations for. my players."
  • Jacari Lane was in hell the final 20 minutes: "We did everything we could to defend him." Pearl mentioned that he probably wore out in the second half but that Auburn did a good job of defending without fouling.
That's all for BP, now it's time for Denver and Johni:

  • Johni taking over after UNA took the lead: "I walk into every game looking to take over... today it was scoring the ball, rebounding the ball."
  • Denver 9 assists: "It's been a little bit of an adjustment playing point because I didn't play it last year. And honestly it's just being aggressive... I was able to find shooters... it just took care of itself."
  • Johni on Dylan: "It's fun playing next to Dylan... I feel like he's letting the game come to him." Mentioned that he's playing with great confidence and wants him to keep doing so.
  • Same Lane question, Denver: "In the locker room at halftime we stressed keeping our man in front." Mentioned that they had to lock in defensively
  • Denver on Bruce creating adversity: "I feel like it started in practice." Mentioned that they play to the buzzer in practice and that carries over to the game
  • Johni on hitting a three tonight: "I haven't been shooting the best this season so it was good to see one go in... seeing one go in was definitely exciting."
That's all for them

Halftime thoughts ...

Man, I am glad we are playing a twitchy, guard-oriented team. We need this practice. Lane for UNA is the real deal. Even Denver can't stick with him. They're fearless and move the ball incredibly well. They've scored in the paint a lot more than I expected, and I feel like our team is a bit surprised at their quickness.

That said, we have another gear, and a go-to deuce with Johni.

I don't know how you defend us.

UNA had a 1-point lead with like 6 min left, shooting with confidence and better than anyone else we've played this year, and then we just took over and just took it up a notch...and I have a feeling that there is at least one more gear above that, maybe more.

This team is special.
