Found this intriguing article in NeuroImage detailing testing exhibiting the drop in the deep impact of human social activity when conducted through tech instead of in-person. It's been known for a while that EEG waves tend to synchronize when individuals interact face-to-face. Not only are non-verbal cues missed via tech, but degrees of empathy and relatability drop noticeably.
This affects school age children who increasingly communicate through tech, both in and out of the classroom. I think this also gives a window into why people tend to act on their worst impulses online as compared to in-person, and how social media often seems to be tearing at the fabric of society.
