Hey, Bunk.

So Auburn filled one of its two defensive vacancies with the promotion of Tanner Burns to either CB or nickels coach. Yes, I'm surprised just like you are about this development.

Auburn still needs another defensive assistant. Which position? It's technically DE or EDGE, though we've already seen that Durkin has a pretty broad base of knowledge and doesn't mind moving coaches around. He can fill in anywhere he's needed.

Here's how I think the flowchart looks:

a.) If Jeremy Garrett gets fired along with a lot of coaches at Jacksonville, Freeze/Durkin will make a big push to bring him back here. J.G. was here before and did great work before. Garrett is much more experienced than the man who replaced him, Vontrell King-Williams, so it stands to reason that J.G. will get his choice of titles. He would be the primary DL coach. He was a good recruiter at Liberty and Auburn.

b.) I think Roc Bellantoni is a second-tier option. He coached for Harsin here before and was the coordinator at FAU last season. Roc is an amazing human being and mentor. He is a very good coach. He is not known as a big-time recruiter.

c.) There's also some chatter out there about Auburn pursuing Randall Joyner, who currently serves as Ole Miss' defensive line coach. Though Auburn always seems to be targeting guys with ties to Ole Miss, I'm not aware of any direct tie between Joyner and Freeze. This is more of a Durkin thing, so draw your own conclusion there. He is known as a very good recruiter.
