Well Bunk, here we are in the middle of the silly season and we currently have have two openings on the coaching staff to fill. This is the time of the year where every fan in American likes to put on their General Manager hat and say who should be hired for their college football team as they think they know what’s best. So in that vein, this post is regarding guys that would be on my short list for the opening at OLB/Edge Coach if I were CBH.

1. Memphis DL Coach Kyle Pope - A former standout LB for Jacksonville State, Pope has been an incredibly fast riser who has deep ties to the state of Alabama. Getting his first break in coaching as a GA for Alabama under Nick Saban, Pope got rave reviews for his technical expertise from both players and coaches on the Tide’s staff. After leaving Alabama, Pope went on to coach LB’s at Liberty for Hugh Freeze and is currently the defensive line coach for Memphis under Ryan Silverfield. Talent acquisition is the name of the game in college ball, and it’s my belief that Pope would be a heck of an asset in recruiting a very talented crop of instate defensive lineman and Edge rushers in this 2023 class.

2. Co-DC/DL Coach Marcus West - A former all conference performer on the DL at Memphis, West has has worked his way up the ladder at various small schools throughout the southeast, as well as being on PJ Fleck staff at Minnesota for a season as a pass rush specialist. Very well thought of young coach that’s going to be a P5 assistant again sooner rather than later for someone soon.

3. Jacksonville State DC Zac Alley - Probably the most familiar name to CBH on this list, Alley is a fantastic young coach who was mentored in the business at Clemson under Brent Venables. After leaving Clemson Alley went on to coach OLB/ST at Boise State for 2 years, only leaving to become the DC this past season at Louisiana-Monroe under Terry Bowden and is now the DC at Jacksonville State under Rich Rodriquez.

Well that’s my list Bunk. Should CBH happen to pick any of these 3 to fill our opening at OLB/Edge Coach, I think he’d be in great hands with a very good young coach that would likely be a plus recruiter.
