The portal

With the current structure, it is about as important as high school recruiting. Folks can say all the players are average, but we have done well on defense since the portal started. We are structured well to get what we need. We will not have 7 to 8 of the 20 kids we signed last year when it all spins out in 4 years. We are at 17 out of 20 as of today. That is not on Auburn that is how it has always worked.

The top 150 recruiting game is great, but it is not possible to keep them in this environment. It appears we have a great portal system now , and I think we will have had our best portal year by far. If Arnold is above average, next season will be nice.

Good post about Arnold last year and the changed offense (OC)…

By @Ace Hanlon :

I’ll go. I think it matters that JA was an RPO guy. He played in an RPO in HS and was recruited to play in an RPO in college under Jeff Lebby. He looked good in the All American game and in his PT during his true freshman season.

Then OU hired Seth Littrell. Littrell is a career Air Raid guy. He tried to blend his offense with the RPO, to make JA feel more comfortable, and it failed.

No doubt in my mind that Jackson Arnold is a big tough runner and a talented thrower. I honestly think he was a highly developed guy coming out of high school. This is not a development issue.

My biggest doubt is how confident he is, at this point. Personally, I would think bringing in someone hungry to compete with Arnold would be the best move. On that front, I try to improve my QB2. Since QB1 has some question marks. My prediction: we will very quickly know how good Arnold is..we will not have to wait.

New League, New Rules

As we have watched the creation of this professional league we are operating in formerly known as amateur sports, I would like to propose a few basic new rules:

1. All athletes will be subject to a "jock tax" in the states and cities they play in as well as their ordinary income tax liability in the state they reside in.
2. All athletes will operate on 4-year contracts coming from high school and 2-3 year coming from JUCO that will have a one year guaranteed income. They can be subject to waivers. Should an athlete be waived, they will receive the guarantee for that year as well as be allowed to finish their academics during the semester they were waived.
3. The portal will be equivalent to unrestricted free agency. Should a player enter the portal, remaining years on their original contract will be cancelled by the organization who originally signed them. This will provide that organization room to add others.
4. All sports should operate on a cap model for NIL. At any given time, the cap dictates ability to deal for new athletes.
5. All athletes can choose to attend school for free during their contracted period and obtain a degree. Should they not choose to attend school, the value of their school costs will be deducted from their overall contract.

Just a few changes proposed. Ultimately amateur sports should be eliminated at the collegiate level at this point and proper regulations and guidance put in place. This will prepare athletes for the real world they have been asking to be a part of.
