Local relevance: My dad's father was a drill sergeant at Ft. Sill from 1943-45 (he'd been an officer in the 20's after graduating from AU, got RIF'd during the Depression, tried to volunteer after Pearl Harbor but was told he was too old... then got drafted and sent to boot camp in 1943, because, the Army). Mel Brooks went to Sill for Basic in 1944, which means there is a non-trivial chance that my grandad made Mel Brooks do pushups.
