I don’t know if it’s a good hire or a bad hire and only future football games and season outcomes will determine that.
That being said, it seems like a stronger hire at DC than several hires at that position we’ve made in the past.
What I do like about this “new and rebuilt” defensive staff on paper is its experience and the number of proven recruiters on it. It’s intriguing, at a minimum…
Before we talk about Maryland specifically I do want to remind everyone that we (Auburn) had a head coach who had a player die on the field (or the locker room) under “similar” physical condition testing…and when the head coach was still trying to make the program “tougher” and, to be honest, still pushing the kids hard and trying to run malcontents and non-compliant players OFF the roster.
The player who died was clearly not one of those players.
It was a sad time and a lot of intense and varying opinions were expressed about it. But two separate investigations found neither Pat Dye or anyone else did anything wrong and our medical training staff did everything right in their attempts to save his life.
But let’s be clear. There were writers and fans (including some Auburn fans) who thought Auburn was responsible, that Dye was responsible, and, of course, those were the only voices you heard for weeks.
The kid’s family backed Dye and Auburn, the administration backed Dye and our medical staff had ZERO legal or civil actions were taken against Dye or Auburn.
Auburn and Dye went on to win 4 of the next 7 SEC titles.
Now, on Durkin…
1. There was no civil lawsuit filed by the family. Why?
2. Durkin was not present and not involved in medical care that was left to Maryland’s trainers.
3. He was fired WITHOUT cause AND paid his $5.5mil buyout That means Maryland could not legally blame Durkin for the player’s death, either.
4. An independent Investigation was conducted and found Durkin not responsible for the player’s death.
5. He’s been vetted and hired by multiple programs in the SEC since.
If you are complaining about the hire because of what happened at Maryland you are just looking for something to be upset or unhappy about…as you likely always are.
Bless your heart, Karen!
