For me, it all starts with chords. The chords themselves have to be interesting. I really love emotional ambiguity in music, so I like “jazz” chords the most. Neither sad or happy, but a lot of feeling.
I also love the merger of the European music tradition (melody / harmony) with the African (rhythm / syncopation). For this reason, I’m really into “downtempo” style electronic. Washy, nostalgic, extended chords over a 90’s hip hop beat. Well known example below.
