It feels like not much has changed. Everything becomes a political rally. Abortion gets brought up, despite the fact that maybe 1-2% of the entire congregation has even considered an abortion. Trans people get brought up, despite no one there being trans.

Is it all just catharsis? Directed anger at things that aren’t nearly as real as we think they are?

I watched a documentary a while back called Stuts, which I highly highly recommend if you are a man. He’s Jonah Hill’s psychiatrist / therapist. I found a lot of his methods to be brilliant. The thing that really stuck out to me was his intent: he felt he had to give people tools to improve their lives RIGHT NOW. None of this “work on it, come back in 2 weeks, and tell me why you’re still sad” bullshit, but actionable things that men could do to overcome depression and become more vital.

There’s too much “praying for you” in the faith these days, in my opinion. We were handed the most perfect philosophy that has ever been put to paper and we hardly teach those principles Jesus was talking about. The power is in the teachings themselves. Jesus reveals himself through scripture, particularly the gospels, first and foremost.

The teachings are all centered around the concept that we can change our reality simply by changing the way we think about it. This is what people actually want. They want to see things as he saw them. They want to think of things as he thought of them. If a person even gets a taste of that, they often fall in love with the teachings and their lives are immediately improved. Simply by changing the way they think.
