Remember the first half of the 20th century when all the countries of Europe had strong militaries? Those were good times. An assassination in Serbia could lead a country like Austria-Hungary to attack Serbia which let the Russians in on the fun to protect their buddies. At that point the Germans got to stick up for their buddies and of course the French and British didn’t want to miss the party. Unfortunately after it happened again in WW2, the Americans put an end to the fun by being the dominant world military power. It meant no more petty skirmishes would lead to global conflict. Our new policy makers are ready to bring back the good times by no longer guaranteeing the security of the euros and forcing them to rebuild their militaries.
