Two years ago, my family moved to a new place in the same county. During this time, I’ve been getting to know the neighbors. One of these neighbors is an 82 year-old man who lives alone and who has no family.
To make a long story short, I go visit him as much as I can. Again he has no one. I’ll spend anywhere from five minutes to 30 minutes a visit and talk about whatever he wants to talk about. He has come to love my family and we consider him a part of ours as well.

A couple of days ago I went and visited with him and I let him talk about whatever he wanted to talk about. He would reminisce of the past and especially his late wife and daughter. You could tell he was very discouraged, as there was no life in his voice or face. As I was leaving, the older gentleman called me over to his chair. He looked me in the eye, thanked me and told me I was his best friend. My heart swelled with joy, but it was all I could do, not to weep. I got my composure, shook his hand and told him that he was my best friend as well. He lit up like a Christmas tree.

Do yourself a favor, go spend time with someone who is alone. Maybe they’re not elderly, maybe they’re just lonely or hurting, Just go spend time with someone in need. Entering into the pain of another human being is very difficult, but can be so rewarding. It might seem inconvenient at the time, but I can assure you, you will receive a blessing. I know I did.

God, forgive my self-centeredness and give me a heart for people. Thank you, Jesus for being my God.
