Just as the race for the green jersey was heating up, Marcel Kittel was involved in a silly crash early in the first Alpine stage that appeared to be caused by touching the wheel in front of him. Kittel went down hard, got back on his bike and tried to continue, but the injuries and the HC climb were too much for him and he abandoned the Tour. Michael Matthews of Team Sunweb, the rider that was challenging Kittel, now claims the green jersey in quite the unexpected manner.
In the race for yellow, Froome was attacked several times on the last HC climb of the day, but reacted each time. The attacks by Barguil, Martin and Bardet were shrugged off by Froome - the only affect they had was to isolate GC contender Fabio Aru. Aru was dropped by the Yellow Group and lost time to the race leaders, dropping from second to fourth overall. Aru's yellow aspirations are finished.
Team Lotto Jumbo rider Primoz Roglic won the stage, being the lone survivor of the initial breakaway. Cannondale rider Rigo Uran finished the stage in second place and also moves into second place for the yellow jersey behind Froome. Barguil still owns the KOM jersey and Yates still owns the white. The Tour returns to the Alps tomorrow.
