Been some questions about developing freshman offensive tackles in the SEC so went back and looked at them over the past 5 years
i think its a viable route but recently the portal has driven teams away from them in recent years. heres the data anyways
BENCHMARK:
imo if you get a true freshman to play above IZAVION's first year, itd be deemed a success. might be 1 year of lag but then you have 3 years of solid OT play
2024:
heres the 2 true freshman OTs in the SEC this year. NOT GREAT but theyre also on bad teams. tompson was also a 5star on on3, consensus 4star. very highly rated. struggling this year
2023:
Proctor consensus top 10 ranking. very highly rated. now one of the top OTs in the SEC. was not super stellar last year but obvious potential. bisontis moved to LG and hes one of the better guards in the sec now. he was a consesnsu top 75 guy, almost a 5star on on3
2022:
lsu started 2 true freshman in the SEC here. actually did well, 7th in pass blocking/6th in runblocking. campbell is now elite/emery jones fell of a bit thisyear. membou for mizzou was a consensus 3star, very good get + development by mizzou staff. trey zuhn was a low 4star. now hes #5 OT in the SEC. jayden williams was a low 4star/high 3star, now #7 OT in the SEC. pettus was 3star/unranked now hes #12 OT (ole msis was 10th pass block/11th runblock this year ahead of auburn)
2021:
-fatheree now #4 OT. was in #50-150 range in rankings. 4star guy. garrett dellinger is one of the best LG in the SEC/country. jeremy james was a bust. andrej karic transferred to tennesse/hes ok nto great. tarquin transferred to USC, pretty good season so far
2020:
-christian jones drafted 5th round. ashmore was one of the best tackles in SEC last year. javon foster drafted 4th round. cameron wire went to tulane, ok not great. jones and johnson ended up being middle of the pack SEC tackles
heres current OT rankings in SEC by pff. youll notice some familiar names
so using miller as a benchmark, most of these tackles ended up having a better season than millers 1st year + pretty good success down the road irregardless of ranking. SEC teams definately shifted away from this recently (only 2 true freshman this year) but imo still a viable path we should look at. the teams that benefitted from playing true freshman early are still reaping the benefits today and might cause the lag in why we didnt see many this year.
