This was brought up in another thread. There is a perception out there that says that atheists read the Bible more than most Christians. So here's are my questions, others (agnostic, Christian, whatever WIL71 is can answer too):
How many times have you read the Bible cover to cover?
How often do you read it?
What if any commentaries and study materials have you read to help you understand what you are reading?
What other religious texts have you read/studied?
My answers:
- At least 7 times in my lifetime cover to cover, but for specific books like those in the New Testament, the Gospels and Paul's letters, Isaiah, Psalms, Proverbs, Job, and a few other old testament books I have read dozens of times.
- I read a chapter in Psalms and Proverbs every night, and I do a devotion which usually just focuses on a few scriptures. I am not currently reading through the Bible on any plan, but this is the first year in the last 4 that I haven't done that.
- I will reference commentaries found on the interweb like Matthew Henry's, and I'll use things like Strong's Concordance from time to time. I really don't have an exhaustive library of commentaries, like I should.
- I have read some of the Koran, Vedas, and some other religious texts. That was a long time ago when I was in college. I haven't read those things in a while, and never with same intensity that I read Christian materials.
