since football seasons over, figured id start a thread tracking portal qbs to track
so heres portal qbs thatll have 2+ years of eligibility remaining sorted by PFF grades
-have gone over this before but transfers in their 2nd year usually outperform the "1 year rentals" (exceptions this year= cam ward, hank bachmeier, diego pavia, kyle mccord, dillon gabriel, kurtis rourke, brendan sorsby, tyler shough. only ward gabriel and mccord were in the top 15 of consensus qb portal rankings across the sites)
-the other thing ive been paying attention to is DEEP BALL pff score. just a trend ive been noticing recently is good deep ball = usually ends up as a good portal qb
-for 2023 portal, deep ball wouldve identified kurtis rourke, hank bachmeier, dillon gabriel, kyle mccord, tyler van dyke as "good portal qbs". we wont know on van dyke cause he was injured vs bama. thats 4 hits tho. 2022 wouldve identified grayson mmccall (transfer 1 year later), kurtis rourke(transfer 1 year later), braylon braxton (bust), graham mertz (good last year, bust this year), drew pyne (bust). 2021 wouldve been: mccall, zappe, kj jefferson, chevan cordeiro (ended up at sjsu and was really good), calzada (bust), hartman,
-overall its kinda 50/50 better some years than others. but definately higher than typical bust rate of portal qbs.
so heres deep ball for 2yrs eligibility remaining through week 5:
the one other thing is top 15 qbs with run grades that enterred the portal
sometimes its low sample size but these guys usually end up being good. 2021: jayden daniels, jeff sims (bust), emory jones (bust). 2022: pavia, adrian martinez, taylen green 2023: riley leonard, sam leavitt (not good so far), chandler morris (big hit)
through 2024 week5, heres top qbs by rushing grade
only eli holstein, avery johnson, arch manning on that list would have multiple years eremaining. dampier is #25 and could make a run into top 15 by end of th year
so far id keep an eye on these guys as potential portal targets:
POWER4 guys: 1.) Avery Johnson (Kansas St) 2.) Eli Holstein (Pitt) 3.) Anthony Colandrea (Virginia) power4 usually has more success than the group5 guys so probably would focus on one of these 3 if they hit the portal
GROUP5 guys: 1.) Dampier (New Mexico) 2.) Kirk Francis (Tulsa) 3.) Gio Lopez (South Alabama) these guys are more likely to hit the portal this year and probably more realistic
