In my first post on this matter dated Jan. 5, I laid out my thoughts on the EDGE coaching search to this point.
I need to add one more name to the flowchart.
The name is "Joe Schaefer." I don't know why I put his name in quotes, but I did.
Anyway, Schaefer is a secondary coach at Syracuse right now. He is more usefully known here as the former linebackers coach at Texas A&M under D.J. Durkin. Schaefer also served under Durkin at Maryland as a grad assistant a decade ago.
This may come down to Jeremy Garrett's situation and how Durkin feels about Garrett. I sense that Tanner Burns wasn't really Durkin's choice for the other spot, so it would make sense that Freeze would give Durkin a chance to add one of "his guys" with this hire. Garrett is universally appreciated by those who know him, though, so maybe he could be a Durkin guy?
We'll see how it goes.
ps: Joe Schaefer is not related to Ashley Schaefer, who owns car dealerships in South Carolina.
