President Trump is going off on DEI programs. I thought it might be interesting to see if we can have a discussion on it here. I posted an article on it to help understand it better.
I think for me the notion that you want to have a diverse workforce is really good. I lead a very diverse team and that diversity makes us better. But what we don't have is equity. Everyone has an equal opportunity but there is no equity. All of our metrics are based on performance.
So what about inclusion. I mean how is it even possible if you have a diverse workforce with equal opportunity to not have it be inclusive? If there were not equal opportunity then there would not be inclusiveness. They seem to go hand in hand to me.
So where does DEI miss the mark? I think it is in the one part people keep missing. It is designed to be a program to marginalize some team members thoughts in order to elevate others. That seems totally counter to the entire point of having a diverse team in the first place.
The other issue is the training that came with it. I mean how many people had to sit through training where they were told that they were bad just for being a certain color or sex. How could anyone think that they way to teach people to be inclusive was to tell them they are shit bags for being what they were born as.
Anyway I hope folks can join and we can get some diverse perspectives and attempt not to just call people names but rather have a conversation.
Also this article is not the end all be all but it does help some. Its definition for "E" says the word equal but that is wrong as the E in DEI is "equity".
Please read the comments folks are leaving in the article as there are some interesting comment there.

What is DEI, and why is it dividing America?
Diversity, equity and inclusion programs have come under attack in American boardrooms, state legislatures and college campuses – and now broadly across the federal government.
