For at least thirty years I have had a golf ball size cyst on my back. It never hurt and I was able to just ignore it. About 17 days ago it started to hurt. Clearly it had some how become infected. As each day went by, it hurt worse and worse. The last ten days or so it felt like someone had stuck a lit cigarette in it. While working to get a treatment for it, my wife would apply a warm bath cloth to it and Neosporin. It made pain manageable. I took nothing else for the pain. Surgeon removed it, leaving a lemon size, one inch deep hole in my back. It is an open wound that has to heal from bottom up. Each day my angel of a wife removes packed gauze from the wound and re packs it with fresh gauze. We are on about day five of this process. Pain is only about a 3 or 4 at this point. I only take a pain pill and hour or so before each re packing because pain ramps up during the process.

Here is a picture of it prior to stuffing new gauze into it and covering it with a new bandage. So far, so good with the healing process.

I’ve had 4 lipomas removed but they were all stitched up so I didn’t have to look at that!
I do live to watch Dr Pimple Popper who removes them all the time!😎

I'm certainly not a doctor, but I'm guessing you probably had a lipoma, (fatty tumor), and not a cyst. Did you take a blow to the "cyst" a week or so before it became infected, (or lay on it really hard etc.)?

Some folks will go ahead and have them removed proactively. Looking at that picture is sort of incentive to do so, (though I don't think I've ever heard of one getting infected before like yours likely did. Get well OP!

I'm glad you put that blue circle around it. I would never have seen it otherwise.

I had a pylar cyst removed from top of my head recently that had been growing for almost 10 years. Roughly the size of the tip of your index finger

Non cancerous and it wasn't deep at all. Nothing compared to this. I just couldn't stand the fact I had a knot on the top of my head

Glad to have it removed. Congratulations!

You aren't a doctor. It definitely was just a cyst that became infected for some unknown reason. Have no idea why it suddenly became infected after at least 30 years.

They made us do it before the operation. Hospital protocol to make sure they cut the correct place. 😁

I guess you didn't see it, but I started off the post by qualifying and clearly saying that "I'm NOT a doctor".

Did you take a blow to the cyst, fall on it, or sleep on it etc. before it got infected?

Absolutely nothing we can figure out that caused the infection.

Sometimes they do just get infected. But a lot of times I'm mentioning extra things and asking questions, to try and help disseminate information.

We can all learn from each other and help each other to avoid pain, loss etc. Thanks for sharing, (even as unusual as that was ;) ).

I still can't figure out why it was moved. We have so many threads about medical issues we a re dealing with. Maybe the picture was just too graphic for Jay. 😁
