** First practice in shells and it was a good one. Wanted to strain guys, did about 40 minutes of 11-on-11 with all three teams. Good evaluation for coaches. Tempo was better. Focusing on physical and mental toughness.

** Cord Sandberg showed up today and practiced for first time, did 7-on-7 and 1-on-1.

** Sandberg threw pretty good. Ball comes out natural. Has to be in shorts for two days.

** Mike Horton did primarily center Saturday, went back to guard today, will be back at center tomorrow. Did a solid job at center for first time. Has snapped last couple of years, always train their guards.

** Kaleb Kim is fighting for the starting center position. Has done some good things. Knows the offense well.

** Calvin Ashley has done some good things at right guard. Committed to keeping him there for now. He's competing for a starting job.

** Still a lot of competition on the offensive line, which is good. Wants to get them in the right spots as soon as possible. Goal is after first scrimmage but can't guarantee it will happen.

** The freshman skill guys on offense, every one has done something the first three days to impress. You will see some this year, some in first game.

** Darius Slayton has improved since the spring. Working hard on intermediate routes. Will be asking a whole lot from him. Challenging all three of top WR to take that next step.

** Believes Nate Craig-Myers will have breakout season. Came on at end of last season. Should have more opportunities this fall.

** It's rare to see someone as talented and well-rounded as Derrick Brown on the off the field. Credit to his parents. Really proud of him off the field. His on field speaks for itself.

** JaTarvious Whitlow is playing with a sense of urgency and wants to be a factor this year. Improved on his pass pro and check downs. If he makes a mistake, he's not happy about it, which is a good sign.

** Asa Martin doesn't look like a freshman right now. Bigger and stronger. Has that attitude that he wants to play. Real confident guy.

** Focusing on Christian Tutt and Matthew Hill at punt return right now. Also have Ryan Davis available. Will be tested in first scrimmage going live with punts.

** Feels like Noah Igbinoghene can take next step as a kick returner.

** If Ryan Davis is best punt returner he'll be out there and be rested a little on offense if he needs it.

** Kam Martin has gotten bigger. Have confidence in him to run entire offense.

** Three freshman WR's have really caught his eye: mentioned Hill and Schwartz. Sean Shivers plays at a different speed. Richard Jibunor has caught his eye. Feel really good about group as a whole.

** ADDED: Malzahn meant to also mention Seth Williams to the freshmen that have stood out, said he's going to be special. Watch out for him in the red zone.

** Hill is really quick, attacks the ball and is confident. Biggest challenge for freshmen is mentally and he can handle it. A playmaker.

** Jamel Dean is a big-time player, can fly, is a technician.

** I like our team. Just need to get the pieces of puzzle put together.

** Young players can be very valuable on special teams. There's some guys that are really going to help as long as they keep progressing.

** Arryn Siposs is a competitor. Aidan Marshall has also raised his game big-time. A really good competition. Like night and day from last year. Marshall has gotten bigger and stronger. Kicked in big games, has confidence.

*****THAT'S ALL*****
