I know not everybody works the same kind of job. If you spend 10 hours a day running a caterpillar loader or teaching elementary school kids, you probably don't write up a weekly status report, but I've been in STEM type jobs ever since college. On every job I've worked since then, I've had to do at least a weekly status report. At a couple of different companies, there were periods of time when we had to provide daily status reports. I've been on some teams where we did daily scrum sessions or standup meetings each morning to review status with management. When I was managing people, I had to get weekly status from my team and provide overall team status to my director. Aside from reports via email, I also meet weekly with my management one-on-one to discuss progress and status. He does this with everybody on the team. I did this when I was managing as well.

Aside from this, having worked for large-ish corporations, there is a daily expectation to provide value to the company to justify my compensation. In my current job, I see offboarding notices every single week. Our CEO has a goal to reduce overall payroll every single year. He has a team actively looking to get rid of as many people as possible and to do more work with fewer people. For everybody at my company, every day is like a job interview. Everyone is expendable and if you aren't contributing more than you are earning, the goal is to get rid of you.

Is this unusual? This just seems to make sense to me. If I am not adding more value to my employer than I am receiving in compensation, or at least filling a necessary function for that employer to profit, why would that employer continue to employ me? I thought this was pretty much how it works everywhere out in the working world, but I get the impression that maybe this is not as widespread as I would have assumed? How about you all? Is this how it works on your jobs?
