Butch Thompson spoke with the media today for about 20 minutes before the start of full fall practice. Here’s a summary, some extra notes and full video…

** Cooper McMurray suffered an arm fracture after being hit by a pitch. He’ll be out for a few weeks buy will continue to be key part of team including coaching first base in today’s scrimmage.

** Cade Belyeu is returning from an oblique injury and should be ready to go within about a week.

** Joseph Gonzalez’s arm hasn’t responded and he’s now taking on-line classes from home. He may take a medical redshirt to allow him to finish school with a full scholarship and not count against AU’s scholarship numbers.

** Looking forward to next five weeks. Will be a very impactful five weeks with so many new players competing. Making sure the team understands the urgency they need to compete with during the fall, especially the newcomers. AU has 23 newcomers including 14 freshmen.

** No scholarship limits set via NCAA or SEC. Thompson is pretty sure they will have 34-man rosters. Hearing scholarships will be set from 24-34.

** Freshman class is great and going to be great, but the biggest question you have to ask of every freshmen is when they’re going to be ready to play at this level. They’ll have to start earning it today.

** Some freshmen mentioned today as early standouts (I’m sure there are others): OF D’Marion Bub Terrell (exciting to watch), C/IF Chase Fralick (good size LH hitter), IF Chris Rembert (impressed), 1B/2B/3B Anthony Tralongo (shown great approach), RHP Andreas Alvarez (performed at high level) and LHP Jackson Sanders.
