Well Bunk it’s decision time for a lot of guys with regard to the NFL draft, and it’s almost certain to me that several players have a very tough decision to make. Guys that are gone include Roger McCreary (first or second round pick), Zakoby McClain (4th - 7th round pick), and Smoke Monday (6th rd to undrafted), as well as Super Seniors Edge TD Moultry and LB Chandler Wooten, but several other guys have a major decision to make and if they return a very good chance to increase their draft status. Here is a list of guys we would be very fortunate if they choose to return:
Edge/OLB Derrick Hall - 51 total tackles and 9 sacks (most productive season for a pass rusher since Sensei Mud and probably a 3rd to 5th round pick with a chance to be a 1st or 2nd rounder if he can have similar success next season)
DT/DE Colby Wooden - 57 total tackles 5 sacks (likely 2nd - 3rd round pick that could be a sure fire 1st rounder if he can put up similar numbers next season).
Edge/OLB Eku Leota - 22 total tackles 6 sacks (likely 4th - 7th rounder that needs to return and continue on improving his get off and pass rush moves)
LB Owen Pappoe - 23 total tackles (injury riddled season that truly limited what OP could have been. Sounds like he’s set to return even though he’d likely grade out as a 4th - 7th round pick).
CB Jaylin Simpson - 25 total tackles and 1 INT (late round pick that needs to return)
CB Nehemiah Pritchett - 25 total tackles 0 INT (fantastic athlete that would probably go undrafted as of now, definitely needs one more year).
Get these guys back and continue to augment our defense through the transfer portal as well as talented HS and Juco players and we could be in a very good spot to start the season next year on defense. Obviously certain guys will need to elevate their play, but that would be a really nice baseline of talented returning Senior leadership to help guide us through another very difficult schedule.
