Anybody had the new COVID?

My wife and I have been suffering from this new version for almost a week. It is kicking my butt...much worse than the previous version I got a couple of years ago. Just curious if anyone else has had the same experience.

I had it (for the first time actually) a few weeks ago. I felt awful for a day, but never ran a fever. Then it was a semi-bad cold for a week.

Had it two months ago. I travel so I had the shots. First time I had it was easy. Lasted two or three days. The second or last time was like you say. Kicked my butt I had no energy for a few weeks. New strains I guess but it was much like type A flu
It's Flu season and possible you could have had both. Did you rapid test for COVID or go to a clinic? They are supposed to test for both when you present with the symptoms you describe to rule out Flu or determine if you need Tamiflu or the new anti-PA meds.

There is some evidence that the more times you get it the worse it can be for you.

Neither. Except for when I have the common cold/the Covid/Influenza and can't breath through my nose - oh wait - can't tell you the last time I had any of those ailments.
That’s awesome, man! I can’t tell you the last time I was sick either!

21,000 people died from the flu in the 2022-2023 flu season, dumbass
My whole family came down with influenza A in December of 2022 and it was the worst thing any of us has had in a long time. Three of us required IV for dehydration. We were all down for the better part of a week and had to cancel a planned vacation. All of us have had COVID, some more than once, but COVID was nothing for any of us compared to that bout of the flu.

Got to improve the Influenza "vaccine" then.
There is a massive effort to design universal flu vaccines (so they don't require annual updates based on the major circulating clades at the time). A few are in different stages of clinical trials.

There is also an effort to design mRNA based flu vaccines.

The flu vaccine as it is is based on the epi data for all circulating viruses and their % representative in the population. There are also 2 different vaccine seasons (Northern vs Southern Hemisphere) and the WHO vaccine consultation meeting happens 2X/year (March & Sept) to present data from all the collaborating centers in the world. There is a ton of work that goes into it and at the end it's essentially a best guess for what the major circulating clades will be for H3, H1, B-Vic. You have to pick so the vaccine manufacturers have time to grow the vaccine viruses to create the vaccine supply.

Never had the old COVID as far as I know....

Didn't know there was a "new COVID"

Is that an actual thing or we just calling anything flu like COVID now?
Yes, there is a new strain (that’s the way viruses work) and it tends to be a little tougher for some than the last two strains.

I’ve had it once (2022)…mild for a few days but it finally settled in my lungs and by the time I tested negative for it I had pneumonia in one lung accompanied by a rather large and nasty mucus plug.

Took me longer to recover from that than actually battling the standard COVID symptoms.

At my age I don’t need or want another round with it.

Last year (2023) I had RSV and that was not pleasant, either.

When you are living in your 9th decade lung infections are not your friends.

I am curious though about the latest booster. My wife and I got the original two-part Pfizer vaccine when it came out. Then we got the first booster several months later. But I haven't gotten a booster since then because the mutations weren't significant enough and they were mostly recommending them for older people and the immune-compromised. It's been suggested that the new strain seems to be hitting harder for a lot of people so this latest booster is recommended for more people.

Every time I've gotten the vaccine or a booster, it waylaid me for about 12-18 hours, then I was fine. But that's non-fun obviously.

My question is, for those of you who had a similar reaction to the vaccine as me and have gotten the latest booster - did it kick your butt like the others or was your reaction milder?
I got the 2 Modena shots and I had a 103 fever for 3 straight days after each shot. Then I got COVID about 7-8 months later and have a 105 fever for 5-6 days. Maybe the shot saved my life or something but I won’t ever be getting another COViD vaccine due to how bad they made me feel.

The bammer had the same experience. He got extremely sick and missed multiple days of work after the initial round of covid shots. He had the original covid before vaccine and about 4 times since and said the covid made him less sick than the vaccine.

He also got a lump in his pec shortly after the first two shots and had to go get a mammogram. It was labeled as “probably benign” and disappeared a couple of months later. Just really weird stuff.

I got COVID sometime in 2020 and was completely asymptomatic. I only knew from getting tested for the antibodies after my daughter had it. She was almost but not quite asymptomatic. We don't know if she had gotten it from me or I from her. I got the two initial Pfizer vaccines once they became available. Several months later, I got COVID and it was symptomatic that time, but not very much so, like a mild case of the flu. I've never gotten a booster and also never contracted COVID (as far as I know) since then either. I will not willingly take another COVID booster. If I were doing it over, I probably would refuse the initial vax too.

That's the worst reaction I've ever heard of. Like I say, every shot I got, about 6-8 hours later I started feeling like crap and it lasted 12 hours or more then I was fine like nothing ever happened. But that was enough to make me not want another one if it's not really necessary.

Same, we only got it because we were endlessly worried about exposing our parents and my grandmother. We all ended up getting covid at the beach anyway.

Are people really still testing for Covid? Crazy how basically nobody gets the Influenza anymore.
My kids were sick recently and our urgent care swabbed for covid, flu, strep in one go. My boys came up positive for strep (it's ripping through the elementary school right now). But the doc said the new covid looks a lot like strep (sore throat, body aches, fever). So they're testing all three. Flu will ramp up in a few weeks when kids are indoors more and start wiping snot on everything.

My mom is in her late 70s and refused to get the vax. Never did get one. We stayed away from her for many months to avoid exposing her. We suspect she had COVID at some point anyway, but can't verify it. If she did, it had to be mild as she never had to go to the doc or hospital. I was pretty sure she would get it and die, but she's okay. Several old and/or otherwise unhealthy people in her church and community did get it and die though.

Parents, both 80, got it 2 weeks ago. Very mild flu like symptoms for 2 days but not much cough/chest congestion. Father was back in his office on the third day.
I probably got it. Throat swelled a little around the same time but one dose of Ibuprofen knocked it down.
Same as when I got Omicron (Sugar bowl 2022).

There are known worse reactions to the COVID vaccine AS WELL AS MOST OTHER VACCINES….but numerically RARE.

My adult son had one of those rare reactions to one of two vaccines he received on the same day from his doctor two years ago…it was either a COVID vaccine or a Flu vaccine….as this rare condition is a potential reaction to ANY vaccine.

He was able to recover from it but is still monitored every 6 months (blood tests) and has been told he should never receive another vaccine shot.

It was scary for him and us for several months.

At age “REALLY OLD” I have probably received three dozen or more vaccine shots in my lifetime and have never experienced any reactions or even discomfort. Not one. And that includes 6 COVID shots.

Yet my genetically very similar son reacted to one of two vaccines taken the same day and his reaction was life threatening and requires annual monitoring to ensure it has not returned.

It’s mathematical, folks…..not a conspiracy or medical ineptitude.

Papa Bare, stay home and let Mama Bare take care of you!

Just got home from WallyGreens! I am fine. Just a bad head cold I guess. No covid or flu.

Pappa Jew Dawg is back and can go to Athens. Section 104 here I come!

Big Blue-- I am wondering if I should just skip this game?? I am scared a little and @SH0RTS has strongly advised me to stay put. Then again, @stutsman23 needs support over there. I am on the fence. Mamma The Baptist Bear does not care. She just wants me to not cuss when I get upset with Hew.

I am so glad that I just have a cold!

Papa Bare, I am not superstitious, but does Auburn usually win when you attend UGA games or do they usually lose? :)

Well, as of late--we lose!
But, I was there for wins in 69, 71, 77, 79, and some in between these and our last win in 2005. We have not won since then-sigh!

I was there for this one too!

Papa, according to @murray_hitchock we are gonna pull an upset, so if you believe that can happen, this might be one you don't want to miss. If we did pull the upset, it probably would be the most fun time in Athens for us since that 1999 upset.
