I'm seeing supposition 2018 is going to be a good season for Auburn. A solid QB, decent receiver corps, no real dominant back but a salty defense many are saying will be the best in a while.

Reminds me of preseason expectations for an Auburn team in another year ending with an "8."

Not 2008, that was Tuberville's swan song. The Tony Franklin experiment was doomed to failure and Saban was sucking up recruits like a fat kid at a Baskin Robbins buffet.

Not 1998, that was Bowden's Waterloo. Without the prodigious talents of gunslinger Dameyune Craig to lean on or brother Tommy to keep L'il Terry focused, it was all over by the time the one-time wunderkind tendered his midseason resignation.

No, it was 1988 when the preseason talk was similar to 2018. Auburn had Reggie Slack replacing Jeff Burger. The Florida native was a step up physically and just needed seasoning. He had a good receiving corps of Lawyer Tillman, Freddy Weygand, Shayne Wasden, Alexander Wright and TE Walter Reeves with him.

And Auburn boasted what might have been the fiercest of all Wayne Hall's defenses. Led by eventual Lombardi and Outland winner Tracy Rocker, the Tigers' defensive averages were legendary. They held three straight October opponents to shutouts. They gave up 7.2 points and 63.2 yards per game. Save that unforgettable one-point loss in Baton Rouge, they would have been undefeated.

If you really want to see the unbelievable, watch them in action.

If we see something like this again, if Auburn gets rid of the pattern for years ending in "8" then we'll all be pretty pleased come December.
