May seem like poor planning to most but I can assure you that the City of Auburn did everything within their power to make this happen on a much more timely schedule. Funding became an issue, and the City elected to shoulder the burden in order to get the project moving and minimize the impacts on traffic as much as possible. Will be a huge improvement to this junction when completed.

AUBURN, Ala.- Work to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Cox and Wire roads is expected to begin this summer. This highly anticipated project will improve traffic flow and safety for all who travel in the area.

Roundabouts reduce serious injury and loss of life crashes as well as traffic congestion. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts typically achieve a 37% reduction in all crashes and a 75% reduction in injury collisions.

Roundabouts are designed for the desired speed, traffic movement and traffic volumes specific to a particular roadway. Therefore, this roundabout will be different from the traditional traffic circle found in some of Auburn’s neighborhoods, allowing larger vehicles like school busses, fire trucks and 18-wheelers to easily pass through.

Tips for roundabout use:

  • Slow down when approaching a roundabout,
  • Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists,
  • Yield to circulating traffic when entering, and
  • Use turn signal to indicate intent to exit.
