A lot was made about the defense being a weak link before the season started.
vs. Power 5 opponents
Scoring Defense - Auburn finished #3 in the SEC allowing 22.8
Total Defense - Auburn finished #8 in the SEC allowing 377 yards per game
Red Zone Def - Auburn finished #1 in the SEC allowing points on 75% on attempts, and only 45% ending in TDs.
3rd Down Def - Auburn finished #2 in the SEC allowing conversions on 30% of attempts
Auburn was able to get 21 sacks in games vs. Power 5 teams. That would rank 8th in the conference.
Auburn allowed opponents to gain an average of 165 yards rushing per game which would rank 10th in the conference
Auburn allowed opponents to gain an average of 212 yards passing per game which would rank 6th in the conference.
Without looking too much into the comparisons, from what I can see this defense was statistically as good as the defense in 2019... maybe slightly better in some areas and slightly worse in others.
Kind of incredible to see a seasons success limited by bad offense again.
