Would love to know what happened with Dubose if anyone knows
Q. Why'd you decide to go to Auburn?
A. I was the No. 1 lineman in the country. Bama had just won the national championship, and Jessie McCovery, who was my Auburn roommate out of Theodore, was the No. 1 tight end in country, and we went on our visit to Alabama together. I met coach (Gene) Stallings, and he looks at Jessie and says, "How're you doing, Willie?" and he looks at me and says, "How're you doing, Jessie." But then, too, I kid my two friends Roosevelt Patterson and Kevin Lee, who played at Alabama and played at Vigor. They were our hosts. My weekend at Alabama was the weekend of the national-championship celebration. Those guys, they left us. Roosevelt swears to this day that he didn't leave us. But he left us. I give him a hard time. I tell him, "Roosevelt, if you hadn't had left me in the hotel and coach Stallings had called my name right, I would have been at Alabama." Really, though, it was big ordeal. I want to tell the story one day because there was a lot more stuff going on with myself and -- who was the coach after coach Stallings, the D-line coach? (Mike) DuBose and I got into a big spat down here about something that was said. I've got a whole story to tell about that one day. If it was today's times, it would've made national news. I grew up an Alabama fan. I grew up hating Auburn. But I love Auburn now and definitely respect Alabama a lot, what they're doing. But there's a whole big story about why I didn't go there.
