Out of the many, many successful coordinators who later failed as head coaches, Will always struck me as one of the more interesting cases.
He was a good recruiter, especially at Florida. His defenses were always outstanding there, too. Obviously we all remember how bad the offenses were, but Will seemed eager to try new things every time it didn’t work out.
If I recall correctly, he hired three different offensive coordinators (Weis, Pease, and Roper) and not a single one was able to get a lot of production out of the offense. What’s weird is that Will never really struck me as a “meddler”. He’s always been a humble, personable guy, and it seemed to me that he was more than willing to give all of his OCs complete autonomy.
Why did he fail, bros?
