Why did Auburn not live up to expectations in 1984 and 1985?

I’ve always wondered this, but this was before my time. I’ve seen games from both of those seasons, but for those who were alive, what were some reasons that Auburn failed to live up to the lofty expectations they began both of those seasons with?
