What if Gus hadn't gone to the natty year 1?

Hugh Freeze is the hot coach after beating bama 2 years in a row, a feat rarely done during the Nick Saban era. But lets not forget Freeze started slow and expectations were not sky high for him when he accepted the Ole Miss HC position (he was the HS girls basketball coach 10 years ago).

Freeze started 7-6, then 8-5, then 9-4 last season. So the question I ask you: would expectations be as high for Gus as they are now if he didn't go to the natty in year 1 at Auburn? He would have higher expectations than Freeze when he first got to Ole Miss bc Auburn is a better job than Ole Miss historically and Gus won a natty as the OC here. I'm not asking if Gus' expectations would be higher than Freeze's bc I think that's a no brainer. But as HC in his first season, Gus set the bar remarkably high and so far hasn't been able to live up to his lofty standards set year 1.

If Gus started 7-6, then 8-5 last year, would you be as upset as you are now about our poor start this season, or would you be more willing to take a wait and see approach had Gus not reached the pinnacle year 1?

So I guess the question I'm trying to ask is, did the natty appearance year 1 help his chances of being successful long term, or did it hurt his chances?
