Gus Malzahn said Monday night on his radio show. "Obviously he's an impact player. I think everyone can see the difference in the first half against Louisville. Definitely need him back."
Whether Malzahn knows Lawson is likely out for the year or not (my understanding is that, assuming the injury is what many on The Bunker have said, fractured hip, this type normally takes 6 weeks to heal and for 75% of the cases they could return to the field and play while the remaining percentage do not heal to be able to play again), then why say we "...definitely need him back."
Wouldn't you want to say something to the affect of, "If he comes back, that's an added bonus, but we are focusing our energy on getting the next guy ready to play and we need them to step up and perform."
In other words, set the expectation with the team that Lawson is not coming back rather than implying that we cannot be successful without him?
I think Gus is missing an opportunity to set expectations of accountability and mental toughness and instead, is coming from a position of weakness.
