From 2012-2016 at Ole Miss, and then from 2019-2022 at Liberty, Hew-coached teams turned the ball over 198 times across 113 games for an average of 1.75 turnovers per game. Hew-coached teams at Ole Miss finished 101st, 41st, 97th, 89th, and 77th in "turnovers given up" during the five seasons he coached there. Hew-coached teams at Liberty finished 46th, 63rd, 115th, and 119th in "turnovers given up" during the four seasons he coached there.

So how did he win like that? The answer might be found looking at the overall turnover ratio for each of those years. Across 9 years as a head coach at Ole Miss and Liberty, Hew-coached defenses (lol) caused 1.65 takeaways per game. So overall the turnover margin is still negative all-time for Hew, but not by much. It's basically equal.

In 2012, Ole Miss averaged 2.2 takeaways per game. They also gave up 2.2 turnovers per game in their own right. Margin = basically equal. Final record = 7-6.

In 2013, Ole Miss averaged 1.7 takeaways per game. They also gave up 1.6 turnovers per game. Margin = slightly positive. Final record = 8-5.

In 2014, Ole Miss averaged 2.5 takeaways per game. They also gave up 1.9 turnovers per game. Margin = very positive. Final record = 9-4.

In 2015, Ole Miss averaged 1.8 takeaways per game. they also gave up 1.7 turnovers per game. Margin = slightly positive. Final record = 10-3.

In 2016, Ole Miss averaged 1.4 takeaways per game, they also gave up 1.5 turnovers per game. Margin = slightly negative. Final record = 5-7

In 2019, Liberty averaged 1.4 takeaways per game, they also gave up 1.2 turnovers per game. Margin = slightly positive. Final record = 8-5

In 2020, Liberty averaged 1.1 takeaways per game, they also gave up 1.2 turnovers per game. Margin = slightly negative. Final record = 10-1

In 2021, Liberty averaged 0.9 takeaways per game, they also gave up 1.8 turnovers per game. Margin = very negative. Final record = 8-5

In 2022, Liberty averaged 1.8 takeaways per game, they also gave up 2.1 turnovers per game. Margin = negative. Final record = 8-5

Obviously, right now, our turnover margin ratio is off-the-charts bad. We're turning the ball over 2.7 times per game and only getting 1.3 takeaways per game. That's the largest negative margin so far in Hew's career. It seems the turnovers, while egregious right now, probably won't go away completely even when he rights the ship. These offenses have always turned the ball over. However, they could historically afford to be aggressive because the defenses would cause some takeaways of their own, basically off-setting anytime the offense fvcked up. We don't have that luxury right now.
