I know people's memories are often short, but surely there are at least one or two here who remember Tubs, who was visiting Auburn early in the season last year, being interviewed on the pre-game radio show. He was throwing out positive vibes about the program, and at a point he began raving about Sean White, whom he said he had tried very hard to recruit. Comments like "he really has the 'it' factor," and "he's gonna be a great QB at Auburn," "he has a very bright future here," etc.
I found that significant for several reasons:
1. Tubs obviously still had good connections at AU and had probably been hearing complimentary things from the staff and/or from son Tucker about his rival teammate.
2. He totally initiated this point of emphasis. He wasn't being asked about White or the QBs. As I recall, he was just talking about the general state of the program and maybe about the recruiting talent AU was bringing in.
3. He had to do this while Stan, Quentin, etc., started yucking it up after some throw-away line they had interjected (making fun of Stan as QB or something goofy like that, the stuff they usually do when JJ is being interviewed). They seemed much more interested in their gigglefest than in hearing what Tuberville was trying to say. Anybody else being interviewed would have just let his comment go and let the guys run off on their own. But he was insistent -- and talked OVER them to continue his point about how impressed he was with White and his promising future.
I have no special knowledge of White's abilities or whether he has what it takes to do the job (though I'm guessing he has niftier feet than is generally credited), but I filed that episode away as being something worth remembering.
And by the way, I'm appreciative of what Rod, Stan & Quentin bring to the broadcast. I just get pissed when they sometimes seem more intent on goosing each other than in taking care of the interviewee and the listener.
(Cue now all the smart-ass remarks about how a low-post-count commenter couldn't possibly add anything worthy here -- and about how Tuberville wouldn't know a good quarterback if the guy catapulted over him.)
