If we get a transfer QB will there be a real competition? There was no real
competition among the QB's last year. It was always going to be Thorne. Do we
know what the NIL contract contained. I'm not saying that we contractually
committed to starting Thorne but no QB wants to leap into a situation where he
could sit. Even with no contractual strings there will be a strong tendency not
to admit you shelled out NIL dollars for a non-starter. Just like the NFL: a
fifth round pick has to prove to the coaches that he can play while a first
round pick has to prove he can't play. Can't make an arse outta the GM.
These coaches had to get a QB from the portal; no choice. Their first target
fell through. They found Thorne and brought him and he would have to be much
worse than the competition to lose the job with his experience, resume, and NIL
investment.
He would be great surrounded by elite OL and WRs but so would a lot of
quarterbacks. He was solid with his feet but didn't terrify DC's with his
threat to run enough to change the way they play. Nobody is avoiding man to man
for fear of his running. And he doesn't have the arm strength or long ball
accuracy to make a defense pay for eyeing the backfield. He had pretty decent
accuracy in the short and medium game but his timing was chronicly late perhaps
due to tentativeness in pulling the trigger. If a receiver is open out of a
break he would no longer be by the time the pass arrived a second later.
Not saying I don't want a stud transfer. A stud at QB could make us a playoff
team (yes with the current OL and next year's Wr) Just saying that there won't
be a QB competition if we sign one. The evaluation is before we offer because
he will be the guy. If he kills it - great. But if not the staff will likely
double down, triple down, and quadruple down on him as the starter like with
Thorne.
If we just don't want to spend that kind of money when we could build for the
future then we #1. Should only target multiple year transfers at all positions.
#2. Absolutely not start Thorne over Brown and White. He only has one year and
it would be insane to waste the reps on a senior rather than developing the
younger QB's.
In my opinion we have 2 primary routes:
If we 'Got to win 24' then we keep an eye for a portal QB or definitely open the QB Competition up for real.
If we're 'Building for 25' then we cannot start the senior at QB.
