Smack dab in the middle of drivel season but also in the middle of summer concert season...I wanted to detail the best concerts I have even attended with a top 10 list.
Too long, don't want to read - Rock is Dead with Korn and Rob Zombie at the BJCC in Birmingham in 1999 is #5
Why it is special
If you grew up loving music and watching MTV in the late 90s you know Korn and TRL had a very weird relationship IMO. My music being popular and being played with Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears confused the heck out of me but MTV promoted the hell out of this tour. It was Korn and Rob Zombie...two huge artists then and today frankly. I grew up in Atlanta and for some reason this show was not coming to the ATL. I was 17 and begged my parents to let me go...they would not let me go alone with friends so I offered to pay for gas, hotel, food and tickets for me and my younger sister if they drove us to Birmingham. They agreed to that and this was my first of many heavy metal road trips!!!!
Highlights
We got Covers!!!!!!! - Deftones Engine No. 9, Earache in my eye and Low Rider
Rob did 4 White Zombie covers including Super Charger Heaven
Blind is the greatest opening song of all time...I will die on this hill. Korn playing this song any other time but first is dumb IMO, last is acceptable.
Kill you is a very cool song and translate well live
Super Charger Heaven!!!!!
What Lurks on Channel X!!!!!!!
Setlist
The Korn Kage was one of the coolest things ever...fans were on stage behind the band in what looked like a cage they could shake and move around on. It was perfect in every way for the band. This was my first time seeing Rob (I had seen Korn before) and his show was visual overload. Robots, Monsters, Fire, Dancing girls, screens, etc. Rob Zombie's creativity is unmatched.
Supporting Acts
Rob Zombie
Videodrone
Why it should be higher
First of many, many road trips to go see a concert. It laid the groundwork for Metallica in Barcelona (LAMP), festivals in Vegas, Daytona, Louisville and so much more the last twenty plus years.
Why it should be lower
Not a unique show...typical venue, typical tour, typical crowd.
