That was an absolute rock fight. State came to play and hit us in the mouth from the tip. Great poise and toughness by our guys today to weather a bad start and grind this one out. When they cut it to 1 late, @MattAU05 and I were talking about how this was the time for this team to play its best and finally get a close win. Has any team ever made it to march with their 26th win being their first by a margin of less than 10? I doubt it. Very glad to see our guys lose the distinction of only blowing teams out. Winning battles like this is how you earn the opportunity to cut down nets in march.
Dylan had 4 points today, but they were the biggest scores of the game for us. When state was on a 7-0 run to cut it to 1, Dylan played the best 3 possessions in an Auburn uniform. Scored to put us up 3, blocked a 3 on the other end and then got the dunk despite 2 state players under the basket with him. That run won the game for us. Hubbard was on fire and we had to answer to stop their run. Dylan has had a heck of a career and if we cut the nets tomorrow, his 3 possession takeover today will be a huge reason it was possible.
Chad led us in scoring and his late corner 3 to put us back up 6 was a massive bucket. Great job by him to shake off foul trouble and manage to still be a key factor today. He’s struggled some games this year when things weren’t going well for him. Today he fought through it to lead us to this W.
This was really a complete team effort. Not our best game on offense by any stretch, but we had 5 guys in double figures. Everyone was battling on both ends of the floor. This wasn’t one of our pretty blowout wins, but we desperately needed to win a game like this. The biggest difference between today and yesterday was 18-4 assist to turnover against SCAR versus 15-15 today. We cleaned up the turnovers to some extent in the second half which was a huge factor in holding the lead the last 20 mins. Tomorrow, limit the turnovers again and I feel very good about our chances of cutting down the nets.
