I've been watching some video of Johni Broome, who is a top Auburn target in the portal out of Morehead State. He's 6-10, 235 and averaged 16.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.9 blocks as a sophomore. He shot 55.5% from the floor and 63.6% from the free throw line.
Some observations...
** He's a back-to-the-basket 5 all the way. He's attempted 5 3-pointers in his career and missed all of them. I didn't see him attempt a shot outside of 10 feet in the highlights I watched, which I liked. Like a lot of bigs, he wants to improve his range and add 3-point shooting to his repertoire and with that in mind he could probably get some work at the 4 too.
** He has very, very good hands. Receives the ball well and controls it around the rim. He's also good at getting position down low and making himself big. Plays physical.
** He will hit the offensive boards and get you those second-chance points that can be so valuable. Knows how to use his body to get in position to score or rebound. Overall, a strong rebounder, better than any AU had last season.
** He's not as good a shot blocker as Walker Kessler, few in college are, but he can protect the rim and really improved on this part of his game from freshman year to sophomore: 1.9 to 3.9 bpg.
** He would excel in Auburn's high pick-and-roll that Kessler used so effectively last season.
** He's a good athlete, not great, and has average to above-average quickness. He's not going to bring down the house with thunderous dunks, but can finish strong at the rim. He runs the floor fairly well.
** I'd project him to start at the 5, splitting time with Dylan Cardwell, if he ends up choosing Auburn. I think Cardwell would really benefit from working against him in practice and they would complement each other well.
** He's originally from Plant City, Fla.
** He is going through the draft process, but most expect him to return to college for another year.
** He's considering a number of schools including Auburn, Gonzaga, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Texas Tech, Indiana, Ohio State, Iowa State, Houston and Virginia Tech.
