A desire to return to a 'better time' (in this case for example the 1950s) which were only better for one group... or to maintain the status quo, which a certain group benefits from.

Exactly, but on the flip side of this all of us are human and we all sin..we should strive to love everyone, but we all fail to do so at some point in our lives whether it's neighbor, friend, spouse, family, etc. Most religions are formed off of this basic principle, not just Christianity.Yep just love each other and get along even if your beliefs are different. Sadly too many people don't understand that.
