We played NET #48 USC and got a win. But we beat them too badly and it dropped them from 48 to 52. To 50 NET wins on a neutral are Q1. So we are still at 1-7 in Q1.
Alabama got their ass beat by Florida. Florida went into the night 35th in the NET, but because they beat Alabama so bad they’re now 28. So Alabama’s home win over them became a Q1. Alabama netted a Q1 win with a loss, but if they had won they would’ve only gotten a Q2.
Maybe we can benefit from something like this, right? Mississippi St. crushed UT and got a big bumped in the NET to 32. So it’s a Q1 game for us today. That’s good. But we won’t be able to pick up an extra Q1 win by virtue of them moving into the top 30 because they won’t move in with a loss. I guess the only positive is if they beat us, they’ll move into the top 30 and we pick up a Q1 no matter what. But it’s kind of BS.
I get the point of the Quad system, but the fact is that it’s really flawed and kind of screwing us this year. I really hope the committee doesn’t look at it too strictly, or over-apply its value. Otherwise some poor 1 seed is going to see KenPom #4 Auburn as the 4 seed in its bracket and that’s not really fair for the 1 seed.
UPDATE: As of this morning, 3/17, Miss St is 31 in the NET and USC is 51. Each is one spot away from giving us two more Q1 wins. If we win today and those were Q1, we would be 5-7 in Q1 and 8-0 in Q2, 4 in KenPom, 5 in the NET. Those numbers are easily good enough for a 3 seed, and probably competitive for a 2 seed. But because two teams are one spot out do Q1 we may be locked in at a 4. It makes absolutely no sense.
