I hope that the SEC adds no more teams to the conference. But if they do, say, add two more teams before calling it “quits” on expansion forever, these are the four teams I’d go after, in order…
4. The University of MIAMI
If The University of Florida didn’t exist, then Miami would be higher on this list. But of course, if UF didn’t exist, then this post would not exist, because the SEC would very likely not be in this position. But UF does exist, & Miami is 4th on this list. That little swath of real-estate, that haters disparagingly refer to as, “a glorified sandbar”, is such an important resource for the southeastern United States, (I know, I know… the culture of Florida- beginning at about Ocala & continuing until one reaches the Caribbean- isn’t “southern”). But hey, “Little Havana” isn’t U.S. culture either… but last I checked, Ricco Tubbs & Sonny Crocket are still considered Americans, & Little Havana is still technically within the borders of the Stars & Stripes. So I think that Miami would be a great addition to the SEC. Sexy, Sexy, Sexy… It is, after all, the Southeastern conference, & One can’t get any more “southeastern” than Miami.
3. Florida State University
This one is a no brainer. They’re the single most “SEC” team in the country…. AND THEYRE NOT IN THE SEC. Oh, if only we could go back to the early 30’s- the twentieth-century version- & re-create the conference. No doubt, if that were the case, & if I was the one calling the shots, then the first state to have two universities in the SEC would be “that glorified sandbar”- Ponce De Leon’s baby. Babes galore, palm trees, & enough Spanish moss to make Savannah look like Worcester. Yep, it’d be great to have the Seminoles- college football’s “The Prodigal Son”- come home. But in this version of the Biblical parable, the “Elder Brother”, (Gainesville…), has incredible power, & could actually tell his “old man” to tell the younger brother “where to go”, so to speak.
2. The University of Virginia
People from the Deep South don’t deal much with Virginians, these days. True, Tennessee shares a border with “The Land of Lee”, & Kentuckians perhaps are acquainted with the citizenry of Virginia. The bottom line is that it’s a beautiful university in a beautiful state, (Newport News, anyone?… anyone?…). UVA would be a wonderful addition to the SEC. It’s the northeastern most “southern state”, has decent athletics, & is an academic beauty. And Charlottesville-ites can “snob it up” with the best of ‘em from Austin, Athens, Charleston, & Gainesville.
1. The University of North Carolina
Like a book that lay on a table, with another book on top of it- you can’t have UVA without UNC. But this little beauty isn’t just a place-holder- It’s a masterpiece. So much tradition in basketball, & the academics are incredible. It’s just a beautiful state, aesthetically. And like Virginia, it’s one of the original thirteen colonies, It fits perfectly within the SEC footprint, & shares much culture with Tennessee & South Carolina. And these guys are major-league snobs- primarily because of academics. I’d put them right with, or slightly behind UVA.
So there you have it. I never thought I’d live to see TEXAS in the SEC.
I can’t imagine the sheer, cumulative arrogance that will spill up & over the city gates of Gainesville, Florida, when The University of Texas comes calling, as early as next year. Hubris, like the salty waters of a hurricane, will engulf that city, & ultimately empty into the Atlantic Ocean & into the Gulf of Mexico- affecting the dispositions of the citizenry of Floridians as far away as Key West, Naples, & Fort Lauderdale.
