An article today pointed to the 1997 Iron Bowl and the screen pass to Ed Scissum as a stupendously bone-headed play call for the fumble and turnover that resulted. I will buy the pass play as unwise because Bama needed to chew clock. That means run the ball and punt, not take the chance on an incomplete pass that stops the game clock.

But I still maintain the fumble wasn't solely the result of the play call. Scissum caught the pass and secured it so at that point it's all on him to hang on to it. Houston just made a good play.

What if they had handed off to Scissum and he fumbled? Would the called play be blamed then, or would it be on Scissum for not squeezing the ball?
