I did not follow the situation closely but from what I understand , the water rose so quickly that they couldn't get out and it drove them deeper into the cave

I believe it was a team tradition to write names at the end of the passage after season was over.

This. They didn't go that far back initially but the rain water in that area funnels into that cave. They were forced back by rising waters filling the cave from the opening. Basically, they were cut off due to a flash flood and had to find the high ground.
