Nebraska with Tony White, NC State with Tony Gibson, Mississippi State with Zach Arnette, and John Heacock with Iowa State. 3 of those finished in the top 40 of total defense ahead of Auburn and Ron Roberts this past year, with Iowa State coming in at 50, just 5 spots behind Auburn.
This is not an endorsement that Zach Arnette should be Auburn’s next DC, but more of a post regarding misinformation on the 3-3-5 as a whole. It’s an ultra aggressive system that relies on athletic defenders and is similar to Roberts system in that it feeds off negative plays and is a high risk, high reward type of scheme. Contradictory to the belief by certain posters on this board and other places, the 3-3-5 is a one gap scheme up front (not a 2 gap like the 3-4) and often slants, stunts and brings blitzes from a variety of angels and launch points, and is typically married with Cover 1, Cover 3, and Match-3 coverages in the backend.
No system is perfect and they all have flaws, but there’s no doubt in my mind that Auburn would easily be able recruit more skilled and athletic defenders to this system than anyone else currently running this scheme and I’d be willing to bet Arnette could easily roll out a top half of the league defense with the recruiters we have on our defensive staff. Again this is not an endorsement but more of an awareness post to people that truly don’t understand what the 3-3-5 is as a system.
