Student punching teacher in ATL

Let’s put aside the fact that, in my opinion, he looked like he was ready to throw down himself (understandable), he chased him down 3 times to throw punches as the student was being held by a security guard. He knew, or should have know, that continuing to do that would escalate the situation with other students. That is not protecting yourself. He’s a teacher. The way he acted was more like a teenage student.

Suspension or expulsion and some type of alternative school or detention program. Probably needs some type of cognitive behavioral therapy. Kids like that usually have emotional / mental issues that need professional help and someone caring about them / loving them and supporting them.

The trauma some of these kids have endured is mind blowing.
Doesn’t mean you can go around doing shit like this, but it isn’t happening in a vaccum.
By the time some kids get to high school they’ve seen more dead bodies than people that serve in minor combat zones.
They desensitize themselves to it in order to cope and they lose the sancity of life and the importance of human community.

Again, doesn’t make it ok, but it’s a factor.
Weak. Kid should spend a couple years in
Lock up.

first of all, it rarely works. Secondly, that “kid” and his family are unlikely receptive to therapy. Lastly, odds are he’d be matched up with some phony therapist from better help who decided to become a therapist after failing the real estate exam five times

As a teacher- this is just sad to see..nobody wins in situations like this. I always think about the sweet innocent acting kids that are at my son’s elementary school- and the kids I have at the high school. Somewhere along the way, those kids go from those innocent babies to students like those in the video (ours aren’t that bad). What happened to them? Where did they see that type of behavior exhibited? Where are their parents to guide them? Who is mentoring that child in the way they should go? We as a society have failed these kids and by the time they get to the age of those kids in that video- the damage has been done. It starts at home and unfortunately, there’s zero we can do about that for the most part. It just sucks and my heart hurts for all involved

It really hurts my heart too. However, IMHO, it's a nature versus nurture scenario IMHO, because for the most part, all humans are roughly the same. But the nurture of humans are drastically different due to the differences in culture/environment.

The culture/environment usually serves as a mold and stamps the clay into whatever particular shape IT is, and it's that NURTURE/shape that leads to what that person becomes in most typical/average cases. Sure, a few will break free from the norm/bell curve and serve as deviations/exceptions, but by very definition, the majority will conform to the norm.

But IMHO, there ARE things that we can do to fix this extremely pernicious problem. It's just that folks don't know, or want to address the true root problems. They just stick with surface level, ostensible symptoms and waste time and resources playing petty politics by tossing blame from one to the other so they don't have to do the tough, dirty work to help bring about positive change. :( 😔

CBT rarely works? That’s news to me. Think you could find us a study proving that claim?

Also interesting to know MDs try going into real estate first.

“We” didn’t fail him. His parents failed him. The toxic indoctrination failed him. His choices failed him. Where’s Dad? Where’s his mentor? Where’s all the supposed social programs and assistance that should be guiding him in the right direction? There is a time to just hold people accountable for their crimes.

Maybe they will interview Mom and Dad and get their take on the situation.

Tug, what "social programs and assistance" have you EVER seen that was intended to "guide him in the right direction" by countering and removing all of the poison and detrimental things that were intentionally forced into African-American culture by law and consistently detrimental attitudes, thoughts and systematic racism? I didn't know there were any such programs.

As a matter of fact, I've rarely ever seen any politicians, law makers or powerful people who wanted to do anything except blame it on "personal choice, personal accountability" and such. No one committing an awful act like that gets an excuse for their choice, but if we are to EVER make progress with this extremely awful and dead wrong behavior, we have to identify the true root problems which are in the culture, and weed them out.

IMHO, they've NEVER been corrected, addressed or countered since they were originally put in many, many years ago, (but maybe I'm wrong).

What did @FeelLikeAStranger post that was incorrect?
They don’t know.
Some folks just like to talk tough when they’re drunk on the internet.

They also lack reading comprehension when drunk.
Clearly I said there have to be consequences for this type of behavior.
But if we are ever to actually change these issues for the better, we will have to address underlying issues instead of building more for-profit prisons.

I think don’t think he/she/they even read your post, because what you posted was simply common sense and rational. I think his/her/their replay was one of those where this context didn’t matter as long as it “owns the libs”.

Yore saying “TEENAGER.”

Ok. Here are the details.
