JJ's Passing Stats On 1st Down Plus 2nd and Long Are Ridiculous...
Through our first two games, we only threw the ball 12 times out of 61 first downs. When JJ threw the ball, he went 10/12 for 83 yards (one incompletion was a boneheaded INT). That's a YPA of ~7yds. Comparatively, YPC on 1st is 4.1. On 2nd down and long (>7yds), JJ is 10/14 for 183 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.

Why aren't we throwing more on 1st down with JJ? Given that he throws so well on 1st and 2nd, why are we forcing him to make difficult throws on 3rd down, where he performs so poorly, going 6/15 for 61 yds and 2INTs?

4 of JJ's 5 INTs Were Immediately Preceded By Runs That Averaged >2YPC

What does this mean? I'll leave it up to you but I found it quite interesting.

JJ's Throwing On 3rd Down Kept Our Scoring Drives Alive Against Jax State

Against Louisville, JJ was absolutely awful on 3rd downs, especially 3rd and long. Overall, he went 2/6 on 3rd, with the majority of those being long situations in which he went 1/5 with 2 INTs.

What's interesting is how well he did against Jax State. Sure, you can point out how he only went 4/9 for 42 yards on 3rd down. Yet, it's important to point out a few things - for one, all four of those completions were on four scoring drives, including one that was an absolutely beautiful 3rd and long TD pass to Melvin Ray. For two, it's important to note that JJ only faced one third down on a scoring drive against Louisville, which was a pass to Duke that kept the drive alive. For three, JJ went 2/3 on 3rd and long, compared to the 1/5 performance last week. Doesn't seem like much, but consider the fact that he didn't throw an INT on third down either...

Only 2 TDs Have Been Scored Off Of JJ's 5 INTs, Both Of Which Were Followed By Successful AU Drives

For as much as we get angry at JJ, it's important to remember that the INTs aren't really what have hurt us - it's inability to run on 1st and 2nd downs that force JJ into tough 3rd downs that cause us issues and stall drives. Here's how it breaks down:

INT 1 led to Louisville Punt
INT 2 led to Louisville Fumble
INT 3 led to Louisville TD, which led to AU
INT 4 led to Jax St Missed FG
INT 5 led to Jax St TD which led to long AU drive (fumble in red zone) then Jax St punt then AU TD (JJ pass TD)
