Brain tumor, Covid etc.
Well a week ago we thought she was having a stroke. She was quickly picked up and flown to Princeton. Had seizure in ambulance and was intubated. She was stabilized and heavily sedated. Tests showed no stroke.
Tuesday morning I got a call from dad. Neurosurgeon had just told him she was comatose and couldn’t breathe on her own. If she doesn’t wake up by tomorrow we’ll need to start talking about how long we leave her on life support.
I of course drop everything and drive 7 hours home to help. I figured I was coming to make final arrangements for my mom.
by the time I get to Princeton we have nurses telling us they don’t understand why he said that because she has all reflexes and was just heavily sedated. Wednesday morning Neuro still saying she’s not responding. Family members of another patient in NICU come over and say “that other doctor keeps coming by and saying “can you wiggle your toes? Good job Ms ___.” “Can you squeeze my hand? Good job”
We start trying and pushing. She opens eyes (not focusing) but follows every request even the number of squeezes.
Yesterday vent removed and she’s trying to talk.
This evening she just has a little oxygen in nose and is eating and asking to go home. No apparent damage.
I think the one neurosurgeon is still trying to pull the plug.
